What are Leave of Absence and FMLA?

A Leave of Absence is a period when an employee is permitted to take time away from work, either with or without pay, for various personal, medical, or family reasons. The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is a federal law in the United States that allows eligible employees to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave per year for specific family and medical reasons, such as a serious health condition or caring for a family member. FMLA ensures that employees can return to their job or an equivalent position after their leave, but not all types of leave are covered under FMLA. Employers may offer additional leave options beyond what FMLA requires.
