ADJUNCT INSTRUCTOR - CHILD DEVELOPMENT

HAROLD WASHINGTON COLLEGE

Harold Washington College (HWC) is currently seeking adjunct instructors to teach college-credit, Child Development courses in all modalities including face-to-face classes on campus, synchronous-remote classes via Zoom, and fully asynchronous online courses via the Learning Management System (LMS) Brightspace D2L.

The mission of the HWC Child Development Program is: Preparing students to CARE - to Collaborate, Advocate, and Provide Responsive, Equitable, care and education for young children and their families in the city of Chicago.

The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Preschool Education at HWC is accredited by the Commission on Early Childhood Education Programs of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). As such, a primary goal of the program is to prepare prospective Early Childhood Educators to meet the Professional Standards and Competencies for Early Childhood Educators. The program is in alignment with NAEYC's position statement on Advancing Equity in Early Childhood Education; to prepare prospective Early Childhood Educators to provide equitable learning opportunities for all children.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

      Design course activities in alignment with course objectives that allow opportunities for college students to demonstrate stated student learning outcomes.

      Create an effective learning environment that fosters intellectual curiosity.

      Encourage problem solving using discipline-specific strategies.

      Employ a variety of formative and summative assessments to assess course and program-level student learning outcomes.

      Build capacity for students to achieve their academic and professional goals.

      Foster a safe environment that respects the diversity of people and ideas by modeling responsive reciprocal interactions, and conveying confidence in every student's ability to learn.

      Maintain and submit student grades and other documentation required by the institution.

      Collaborate with colleagues on discipline-specific pedagogical and assessment practices to support student learning and meet accreditation requirements.

      Hold one hour of student conference time per week for every course section taught.

QUALIFICATIONS

      Master's degree or higher in Child Development, Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education and Teaching, Education, or a degree in a related field, required.

      Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate with a diverse group of staff and students, required.

      Knowledge of Brightspace Learning Management System or similar Learning Management System, preferred.

      Prior experience with remote teaching via Zoom, preferred.

      Completed online teaching certification, preferred.

      Experience with a diverse, multilingual student population is desired, as is a commitment to the open access mission of the community college.
