Definition of Classification:
Developed in 1969, the Johnston Center for Integrative Studies is one of the oldest academic living-learning communities in the country and a signature program at the University of Redlands. Students live and learn together in the Johnston dorm, where there are classrooms, creative spaces, a meditation room, a commuter lounge, and a music room. As students in an intentional, consensus-based community, Johnston students work together to use their community budget to bring in speakers, host live music and other events, and support community and academic projects. Central to Johnston is self-governance, which empowers students to make decisions about how best to live and learn together. Johnston also uses a restorative justice approach to conduct in order to restore and repair community harm.
Reporting to the Associate Dean of Residence Life, Housing and Student Wellbeing, the Residential Experience Coordinator is a member of the University of Redlands Residence Life and Housing staff who has a responsibility for the direct oversight of the Johnston Center for Integrative Studies' residential community and provides leadership for the expansion of living learning communities within the University of Redlands' overall Residential Experience program.
Liaising closely with the Johnston Program Director and faculty, the Residential Experience Coordinator is expected to take an active role in both maintaining the traditions and the continued development of a transformational Residential Experience and living learning community program that drives student retention and success. The dynamic Residential Experience Coordinator has a visible and approachable campus presence, fostering student campus life engagement, community belonging, education and development, group and individual mediation and caring follow-up on personal, academic, medical and social issues. This is a 12-month full-time live-in position in a rent-free apartment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Community Development and Engagement
• Create and maintain a vibrant and holistic living/learning environment within the Johnston residential community that supports student success, residential experience and residential education.
• Facilitate student integration and acclimation into their university and housing experiences.
• Work with Residence Life to secure Johnston student budget at the beginning of the academic year and help students learn how to be good stewards of their budget in alignment with Johnston and University policies and procedures.
• Participate and help coordinate the weekly Johnston Community Meeting, maintaining an archive of notes for this meeting, and keeping a record of student expenditures.
• Provide upport for event and programmatic planning, including space and technological needs.
• Provide mentorship and student leadership development to Johnston student leaders and residents to empower, cultivate their creativity, and constructively engage them as changemakers.
• Organize and facilitate Johnston Community retreat in collaboration with the Johnston Director.
• Lead and conduct training on Johnston Community and University events with alcohol policy in collaboration with Dean of Students and Belonging office, Dean of Students Campus Life office, and Public Safety.
• Work with the Johnston Director to help facilitate Johnston's supplementary New Student Orientation, including recruitment of Johnston Student Orientation student leaders, in collaboration with the University New Student Orientation Staff, and Student Campus Life.
• Foster diversity, inclusion, and belonging within the community.
• Help students maintain a strong co-curricular Residential Experience program. Support the ideals of equity and access within the community at large.
• Advise and counsel students regarding their personal, mental health and academic wellness. Refer students to appropriate resources.
• Work collaboratively to ensure the Residential Experience program aligns with department, divisional and institutional priorities, while honoring Johnston's unique living-learning practices and approach to self-governance and consensus.
• Collaborate with housing professionals to discuss and address issues which affect the housing community at large.
• Maintain a visible presence within the Johnston residential community.
• Serve as a residential community standards educator for residential student conduct related community educational initiatives and community concerns, trends, issues, support needs, and interventions. Facilitate Johnston Peer Council (JPC) restorative justice with guidance and in partnership with Assistant Dean of Community Standards and Wellbeing. Utilize student conduct software to manage student educational records. (this is a repeat of 3rd bullet point in first section, so you might not need both)
• In partnership with the Assistant Dean of Community Standards and Wellbeing, oversee compliance and operations related to the Student Food Pantry within the Johnston community.
• Facilitate weekly Johnston community meetings on Tuesdays at 4:00 p.m. Keep an accurate record of student expenditures.
• Collaborate with faculty and stakeholders to implement programs and initiatives connected to the Johnston living-learning community.
• Serve as a department representative on university and/or divisional committees and/or workgroups, and provide collaborative support for events and programs as needed (e.g. orientation, admitted students day, commencement)
• Expand Johnston community collaboration with other residential communities, student affairs, student services and resources, academic affairs, and signature events and programs (e.g. Bulldog Beginnings, Multicultural Festival, Bulldog Civic Engagement Collective, UR The Change Initiative, Social Justice Conference, career readiness, service learning, .
• Establish and oversee schedule for embedded care and student skill development support for Johnston residential community in partnership with campus partners (e.g. Counseling, Career Development, Student Success Center, Wellbeing, bystander intervention).
• Provide support for division of student affairs, Johnston community, and/or institutional signature events and programs (e.g. new student orientation, Bulldog Beginnings, Bulldog Civic Engagement, LiveWell Bulldogs, Student Involvement Fair, Commencement).
• Participate in student affairs and institutional meetings, professional development opportunities, and support the advancement of divisional key performance indicators to advance student success and retention outcomes.
Development, Training and Supervision of Student Leaders
• Oversee the leadership competencies and development of a diverse team of Community Assistants, ensuring National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) career competency integration
• Assist the Associate Dean and Johnston community with the overall recruitment, selection, and training of Community Assistants
• Provide ongoing coaching, support, mentorship, and leadership competency development for Community Assistants. Work with students to facilitate community building, residential activity engagement, residential community floor meetings, and holistic student outreach check-ins in partnership with Community Assistants.
• Co-facilitate weekly course to provide training, address concerns, plan upcoming events, provide professional development, and support overall Community Assistant student leader retention and success, etc.
• Hold weekly one-on-one meetings with Community Assistants.
• Foster communication, collaboration, and positive working relationships within the Community Assistant team.
• Work with students to facilitate study halls and academic support initiatives with Community Assistants. Advise 1-2 RA collateral assignments: RA Recruitment and Selection, Recognition and Spirit Collateral, Communication and Social Media, and/or Student Leader Training and Development
• Supervise the "Johnston Community Intern" work study position.
Residence Life and Housing Operations
• Coordinate residential living placements of Johnston Community students in collaboration with the Associate Dean of Residence Life and Housing, and in partnership with the Office of Student Success and Accessibility.
• Monitor and respond to inquiries from email accounts, phone, calls, and voicemails daily on behalf of the office of Residence Life and Housing and Student Affairs
• Reviews, investigates and responds to housing concerns and complaints of students, parents, staff members and others in a manner that provides community care, solution-oriented outcomes, and accurate information.
• Coordinate with Facilities to track work orders for the residence halls and laundry machine concerns with WASH, university's laundry vendor.
• Post to, update and maintain website and social media accounts on behalf of Student Affairs and Residence Life and Housing.
• Coordinate and reserve campus spaces and equipment for meetings and events.
• Actively support data collection and assessment efforts, including through utilization of and management of student data through use of software (e.g. housing, student conduct, Navigate).
• Conducts assigned responsibilities associated with checking in/out students and other administrative processes related to housing residents in the StarRez system.
• Maintain facilities through regular building walk throughs and inventory accounts.
• Manages community and roommate agreements for Johnston community.
• In partnership with the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, Facilities Management and Public Safety, assists in the execution of fire drills and health and safety inspections as scheduled by the department.
• Maintain FERPA student records privacy regulations, as well as other federal regulations applicable to campus housing, student conduct Clery reporting, Equity and Title IX reporting, and student records management.
Emergency Response and Crisis Intervention
• Perform on-call duties, being accessible and able to respond by phone or in-person. When necessary, return to campus.
• Carry the on-call phone on a rotating weekly basis (including evening, weekend, holiday, and University breaks)
• Work closely with the Community Assistants and Associate Dean to proactively identify and support students in need of care or referral.
• Make decisions in emergencies regarding safety, medical and security concerns, and alert the Backup Administrator-on-Call when warranted.
• Provide educational programming and proactive interventions that promote responsible decision-making, safety, health education, and student wellbeing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Master's degree in student affairs, higher education leadership, higher education counseling, or a related field.
• Two years experience working in a residential community and/or within a residential living learning community in residence life in higher education.
• Experience working with and supporting underrepresented, neurodivergent, first-generation student, and actively involved student changemaker subpopulations.
• Understanding of student development theory and its application to the student-centered experience.
