Salary: $45,000 -$46,000 (Commensurate with experience), this role is partially grant-funded through 2028.

Trees Atlanta is a nationally recognized non-profit community group committed to protecting and improving Atlantas urban forest through planting, conserving, and educating. Founded in 1985, Trees Atlanta works tirelessly to address Atlantas tree loss, protect its forests, and create new greenspace. Empowered by its wonderful community of volunteers, Trees Atlanta serves the metro Atlanta area, and has grown to become one of Atlantas most widely known and supported non-profit organizations.

Job Description

The Workforce Development Supervisor will oversee two job training programs under the direction of the Workforce Development Senior Manager.
The Seasonal Forestry Technician program supports the planting and conservation/restoration programs at Trees Atlanta. These individuals assist with the basic plant care of the greenspaces being maintained by Trees Atlanta, and include watering, pruning, staking, mulching, and invasive removal. This program is where many individuals get their start in forestry at Trees Atlanta and other organizations.
The Urban Forestry Career Pathways (UFOR) is a grant-funded program to introduce adults to Forestry to upskill them for economic mobility and growth. This program partners with the Atlanta Beltline Inc, Birds Georgia, and the Atlanta Center for Self Sufficiency (ACSS) to deliver a 10-week cohort, four times a year. The Workforce Development Supervisor will hire and mentor individuals in both programs while supervising the designated work.


You will have the opportunity to:

Seasonal Forestry Technician Leadership

  • Partner with Trees Atlanta program department leaders to support their seasonal maintenance needs
  • Recruit, hire, train, and evaluate seasonal employees with an interest in urban forestry and urban ecology maintenance
  • Lead work groups in outdoor greenspace work including, but not limited to - tree planting, tree watering, pruning, invasive species removal, mulching
  • Teach various forestry topics to help Techs develop competencies surrounding tree/plant identification
  • Coordinate Technician rotation calendar to ensure program departments have adequate coverage during the maintenance season
  • Lead Technician evaluations and work with department leadership regarding the progress and performance of the Technicians

Urban Forestry Career Pathways Program (UFOR) Leadership

  • Recruit, hire, train, and evaluate UFOR participants within the grant-specified target areas
  • Supervise 10+ cohort participants within the grant-funded workforce development program while partnering with external organizational stakeholders.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise one to two Senior Leads who will assist with working with cohorts on worksites
  • Collaborate and partner with internal planting and maintenance program leadership to design and facilitate programmatic efforts for both youth and adults
  • Collect and analyze data to tell the impact story of Trees Atlantas workforce programming that will influence current and future program funding
  • Assist the Workforce Development Senior Manager with the curriculum development to ensure that the program has well-rounded experiences that will give individuals a working knowledge of urban forestry to promote full-time employment
  • Work with the Workforce development coordinator to schedule room space and follow up communication
  • Fill in for Senior Leads in the event they are absent from work

What you need:

  • Have at least three (3) years of full-time professional work experience in education with one (1) year of supervisory experience, youth programming, outdoor education, volunteer services, outreach/advocacy, non-profit program management, or community-based programming, especially with marginalized communities
  • Have at least one year of experience leading volunteers or employees, experience managing large groups
  • Preferred: Experience with arboriculture/forestry, horticulture, landscaping, or landscape architecture with a working knowledge of plant and tree ID
  • Basic knowledge of flora/fauna is highly desired
  • Have a passion for environmental stewardship, economic advancement, and a commitment to working to achieve greater equity and respect for all
  • Have strong oral and written communication skills with a high level of cultural competency and emotional intelligence
  • Have a safety mindset - this position requires a high level of supervision
  • Able to demonstrate sound judgment in routine, day-to-day decisions; think critically to make decisions and take action, even in non-routine situations
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word), Google Drive applications, and other software that helps with productivity and communication
  • A degree is not required, but will substitute for one (1) year of professional experience if related to Forestry, Horticulture, or Environmental Studies/Design, Education/Environmental Education, Student Development, Non-Profit Management, Community Advocacy, or Volunteer Services
  • Experience with Salesforce and ArcGIS is helpful

Physical Requirements

  • Have a valid drivers license with at least a 3-year clear history
  • Be at least 21 years of age (Insurance requirement to drive Trees Atlanta vehicles)
  • Preferred: Experience driving pickup trucks with hitched trailers
  • Be able to pass both a criminal background check and drug screening (includes Marijuana/THC screening)
  • Be comfortable working in both outdoor and indoor conditions;
  • Outdoors: bending, lifting (approximately 30 or more pounds), and shoveling in various weather conditions
  • Be comfortable working with pesticide/herbicide application
  • Office Setting: sitting and utilizing a computer for long periods of time
  • Have an updated tetanus shot
