Job description

The Engineering Lab Supervisor plans, coordinates, selects, assigns, and directs daily activities of the engineering laboratory. Responsible for the supervision of the non-exempt lab personnel on multiple shifts. The Lab Supervisor maintains competence on all tests and instruments. Performs a wide variety of duties related to laboratory data analysis and review, troubleshoot issues related to test condition, and direct observations of routine AHRI (Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute), DOE (Department of Energy and UL (Underwriters Laboratories) safety testing performance. 

Position Responsibilities may include:

  • Supervision and oversight of technicians' activities on 1 of 3 shifts.
  • Oversees daily routine laboratory operations.
  • Direct observations of routine AHRI, DOE (Design of Experiment), and UL safety test performance.
  • Performs technician training, performance reviews, and coaching.
  • Maintains quality control standards within required guidelines.
  • Responsible for laboratory safety.
  • Oversees related equipment maintenance.
  • Work with lab manager to guarantee that actions are taken whenever test systems and/or data deviates from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
  • Direct observations of routine lab test performance and abnormal testing (envelope, air flow, condensate testing, etc.).
  • Update quality control records, testing results, and preventative maintenance records.
  • Oversee the selection, training, mentoring, and performance evaluation of assigned technicians.
  • Resolves technician relations issues and recommends disciplinary action when required.
  • Troubleshoot issues including room conditions, unit under test, and work with facilities to close out open tickets.
  • Review, validate, summarize data as testing is being completed.
  • Coordinate with our internal cross-functional groups to maintain rooms efficiency and utilization.
  • Communicate with our customers the test request status and test results.
  • Help maintain inventory to maximize test request throughput.
  • Drive the team to achieve yearly goals and 5S standardization.
  • Assists as needed to perform other related duties and special projects to support Design Engineering team as required.

Nature & Scope:

  • Coordinates and supervises the daily activities of a support, production or operations team
  • Sets priorities for the team to ensure task completion
  • Decisions and problem-solving are guided by policies, procedures and business plan; receives guidance and oversight from manager
  • Accountable for the support or production operations team including subordinate work leaders
  • Typically does not spend more than 20% of one's time performing the work supervised

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Demonstrated technical skills in data interpretation and analysis and the ability to troubleshoot.
  • Strong background in data acquisition, controls and software development for testing.
  • LabVIEW experience is a plus.
  • Proficient in working with data sets and validation of data.
  • Intermediate knowledge of working with Psychrometric chambers.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel, Outlook, and general working knowledge of Internet for business use.
  • Ability to be motivational and persuasive.
  • Proven leadership and supervisory skills to lead a high-performance technical team.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills including skills to build relationships with stakeholders.
  • Effective organizational and time management skills to prioritize and complete tasks on time.
  • Exhibits effective judgement and decision-making.
  • Ability to write Standard Operation Procedures (SOP).
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast paced, deadline driven environment.
  • Willingness to share and receive information and ideas from all levels of the organization to achieve the desired results.

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of experience in HVAC laboratory testing.
  • 2 plus years of experience in a leadership role.

Education/Certification:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering.

Physical Requirements / Work Environment:

  • It requires frequent sitting, standing, and walking.
  • Daily use of computer.
  • May be exposure to relatively high and low temperatures for a short period of times when accessing test rooms.
  • Light physical effort required in working with materials and/or equipment.
