Location - This role is in-person. Work primarily takes place at Augustana Campus, Camrose.

The Department of Science at the Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta invites applications for a part-time biology technician assistant position. The biology technician assistant works with the biology technician, laboratory coordinator, course instructors and lab director to prepare materials for a variety of undergraduate biology and environmental science lab courses as assigned by the Chair of Science.

  • Post-secondary education with a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or discipline.
  • 1 year experience in performing standard and molecular biology lab activities is preferred.
  • Experience with level 2 biological hazards and safe handling procedures is preferred.

This position is subject to all applicable terms and conditions of the collective agreement between the Governors of the University of Alberta and the Non-Academic Staff Association (NASA).

  • Coordinate with the biology technician to support the day-to-day operation of undergraduate biology and environmental science labs, including preparation of all materials (i.e., reagents, cultures, media, specimens, etc.) needed for the labs which the Supervisor has designated as this technician's responsibility.
  • Set up and take down experiments for the labs.
  • Assist in the maintenance of laboratory supplies and inventory, placing orders and verifying receipt of all biology and environmental science materials.
  • Responsible for the operation and maintenance of biology/environmental science lab equipment.
  • Coordinate with the biology technician to oversee biology/environmental lab expenditures, and make recommendations for items in the Departmental budget.
  • Assist in the monitoring of all chemical and biological safety issues in the labs, including maintenance of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for all chemicals, biosafety records, annual inspections, etc.
  • Provide feedback to departmental administrators regarding scheduling of labs.
  • Provide technical support to professors, lab instructors, and students.
