Responsibilities & Requirements
Job Requirements:
Is thoroughly familiar with all clerical functions in the department.
Uses computer systems to obtain and accession requests for laboratory tests and perform other related computer functions.
Maintains files of laboratory requests and tests.
Answers the telephone and greets patients and visitors.
Prepares sample for send out to reference laboratories and processes results when reports are returned.
Monitors the activities of the morgue.
Collects blood samples by venipuncture and capillary puncture.
Instruct the patients in the collection of urine samples and drug screens. Participates in the training and retaining of clerical personnel and supervises clerical personnel when assigned.
Minimum Education
High school diploma required
Minimum Work Experience
5 years' experience in a laboratory clerical position required
Required Skills
Ability to type 40 WPM.
Ability to exercise independent judgement.
Ability to read, comprehend, and follow written and verbal instructions and procedures.
Ability to provide verbal info to physicians and patients, tactfully.
Ability to perform all clerical functions in the department.
Ability to remember and consistently apply all the details necessary to collect and transport specimens properly and to use the lab computer.
Ability to write or print clearly.
Ability to accurately identify patients and recognize any differences in spelling of names or listing of hospital numbers.
Ability to communicate well to get along with patients and other lab personnel.
