What is the difference between Junior Structural Engineer vs Structural Designer?

AspectJunior Structural EngineerStructural Designer
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering; EIT/FE certification often preferredBachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering; certification not always required
Work EnvironmentDesign, analysis, site visits, collaboration with engineers and architectsFocus on creating detailed structural drawings and specifications
Employer & Industry UsageEngineering firms, construction companies, consulting firmsArchitectural firms, engineering consultancies, construction companies

While both roles involve structural design, Junior Structural Engineers typically engage in analysis, site visits, and project collaboration, whereas Structural Designers focus primarily on creating detailed drawings and specifications. The roles often overlap in education and industry, but their core responsibilities differ slightly.

What does a Junior Structural Engineer do?

A Junior Structural Engineer assists in designing, analyzing, and evaluating structures such as buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure. They work under the supervision of more experienced engineers, preparing drawings, calculations, and reports. Their responsibilities often include site visits, reviewing construction materials, and ensuring compliance with safety and building codes. This role is ideal for recent engineering graduates who are looking to gain practical experience and work towards professional licensure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Junior Structural Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Structural Engineer, you need a solid background in civil or structural engineering principles, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with structural analysis software such as AutoCAD, SAP2000, or ETABS, and progress toward EIT or FE certification, is often required. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and effective teamwork and communication abilities help you excel in this collaborative field. These competencies ensure safe, efficient, and compliant structural designs and contribute to successful project delivery.

Job description

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Structural Engineering Professional to join a leading global engineering firm. In this role, you will be a vital member of a high-performing design team, performing critical structural analysis and design for sophisticated industrial projects. This is a remote-eligible position for candidates in the Northwest US or Texas who are ready to take full ownership of their work and accelerate their career growth.

What Youโ€™ll Do

As a key contributor to our structural design team, you will handle diverse engineering tasks with a high degree of autonomy. Your core responsibilities include:

  • Design & Analysis: Perform comprehensive structural analysis for traditional steel and concrete structures, including lateral wind and seismic design.
  • Technical Integration: Work closely with Structural Leads and Designers to translate analysis into precise design documents and 3D models using Navisworks and Bluebeam.
  • Quality Management: Maintain a high level of attention to detail by performing rigorous self-checks and conducting calculation reviews for peer engineers.
  • Project Ownership: Manage your specific portion of the structural scope, ensuring all deliverables meet schedule, budget, and quality requirements.
  • Initiative & Problem Solving: Navigate complex or ill-defined project needs by exercising sound engineering judgment and proactively identifying scope changes.
  • Mentorship: Provide technical guidance and coaching to drafters and junior engineers while embracing emerging design technologies.

What You Bring

Must-Haves:

  • Education: Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (with a Structural Engineering emphasis).
  • Licensure: Professional Engineer License (PE or PEng).
  • Experience: Minimum of 4 years in structural engineering, specifically with steel and concrete.
  • Technical Knowledge: Proficiency with US building codes (IBC, ASCE 7, ACI, and AISC) and seismic provisions.
  • Software: Proficiency in structural engineering analysis software, Navisworks, and Bluebeam.
  • Location: Must reside in the USA Northwest Region (AK, ID, MT, OR, WA, WY) or Fort Worth, TX.

Nice-to-Haves:

  • Advanced Degree: MS in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Industry Expertise: Experience in semiconductor or general industrial facility design.
  • Leadership: Proven experience leading small teams or mentoring junior staff.
