Structural Engineer
Duration: Contract-to-Hire
Location: Portland, OR (Hybrid)
Position Summary
We are seeking a Structural Engineer to play a key role in delivering structural analysis and design for a variety of industrial and infrastructure projects. In this role, you will be an integral member of a multidisciplinary design team, responsible for performing a significant portion of structural analysis and design work.
You will collaborate closely with Structural Leads, Engineers, Designers, and other disciplines to develop design concepts, execute analysis, and ensure structural requirements are clearly communicated within design documents and 3D models. This role requires strong communication and interpersonal skills, along with the ability to contribute meaningfully across multiple phases of design.
The ideal candidate has a solid foundation in structural engineering fundamentals, experience across multiple subject areas, and working knowledge of U.S. building codes-including seismic provisions. You understand how structural systems integrate with other disciplines and are developing awareness of broader industry trends and challenges. Growth opportunities in this role are driven by individual initiative, capability, and ownership.
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform structural analysis and design for a range of projects under general supervision
  • Plan and execute work requiring independent judgment in evaluating, selecting, and applying engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria
  • Apply sound engineering judgment and problem-solving skills; proactively seek guidance when needed
  • Develop and apply knowledge of lateral systems, including wind and seismic design in accordance with applicable codes
  • Contribute to development of design concepts and translate them into construction documents and models
  • Coordinate effectively with multidisciplinary teams to ensure accurate integration of structural systems
Quality & Technical Execution
  • Maintain a high level of attention to detail and quality control in all deliverables
  • Perform self-checks and peer reviews, including calculation checks of other engineers' work
  • Ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with project and code requirements
Ownership & Project Delivery
  • Take full ownership of assigned structural scope, meeting schedule, budget, and quality expectations
  • Define scope elements and contribute to forecasting level of effort
  • Identify scope changes and communicate proactively with project leadership
  • Manage workload effectively, ensuring commitments are met
  • Take initiative in ambiguous situations to determine and deliver required outcomes
  • Deliver work in a timely, accurate, and cost-effective manner
Leadership & Continuous Improvement
  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and support to designers/drafters and junior engineers
  • Contribute to improving workflows, systems, and tools within the structural discipline
  • Embrace and support implementation of emerging technologies and best practices
Working Conditions
  • Candidates must reside in the U.S. Northwest Region (AK, ID, MT, OR, WA, WY) or Canada
  • Hybrid work environment (remote and in-office collaboration)
  • Reliable home internet required to support project needs
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in Structural Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Minimum 4 years of structural engineering experience
  • Experience with U.S. building codes (IBC, ASCE 7, ACI, AISC), including seismic design provisions
  • Experience with structural analysis and modeling software
  • Proficiency with Navisworks and Bluebeam
  • Experience designing and analyzing steel and concrete structures
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork abilities
