What is a Structural EIT job?

A Structural Engineer-in-Training (EIT) assists senior engineers in designing, analyzing, and inspecting structures such as buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure. They use engineering principles, software tools, and industry codes to create safe and efficient designs. This role is a stepping stone toward becoming a licensed Professional Engineer (PE), requiring hands-on experience and continued learning. Typical responsibilities include preparing calculations, drafting plans, coordinating with project teams, and conducting site visits.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Structural Eit position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structural EIT (Engineer-in-Training), you generally need a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering, a solid grasp of structural analysis, and an active EIT or FE certification. Proficiency in software such as AutoCAD, Revit, SAP2000, or ETABS is essential for performing technical calculations and preparing design documents. Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills help you effectively coordinate with project teams and address design challenges. These skills are important because they ensure accurate, safe, and efficient completion of structural engineering projects under the guidance of licensed engineers.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a Structural EIT expect to work on in their first year?

As a Structural EIT, you will typically assist with the design and analysis of structural components for buildings, bridges, or other infrastructure projects under the supervision of licensed engineers. Your daily tasks may include drafting construction drawings, running structural calculations, reviewing shop drawings, and helping prepare reports or submittals. You’ll collaborate closely with senior engineers, architects, and other disciplines as part of a project team, gaining hands-on experience with both technical details and project coordination. This early exposure provides a valuable foundation for professional growth and helps prepare you for future licensure and increased responsibility.
