Junior ROTC Instructor - 11-Month
Primary Purpose:
The Senior Naval Science Instructor (SNSI) is a highly qualified, certified Navy, Marine Corps or Coast Guard retiree (W2-O6) to lead our NJROTC program. This is an 11-Month Full-Time position at the minimum pay established by the US Navy. The SNSI's role is to provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences in the Naval Science curriculum and to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. The SNSI will enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society.
This is a young and rapidly growing program currently transitioning from an NNDCC unit to a fully funded NJROTC unit. The ideal candidate will be strongly committed to mentoring and developing high school students while fostering discipline, leadership, citizenship, and personal responsibility among our cadets. We are seeking an energetic instructor willing to invest in students both during and beyond the school day through active participation in after-school and weekend activities, including extracurricular events, competitive team engagements, leadership development, and community service projects.
Walker Valley NJROTC has developed tremendous momentum in enrollment, school involvement, and community support. The program enjoys outstanding support from parents, school administrators, district leadership, and the Bradley County School Board. The unit continues expanding opportunities for cadets through Color Guard, Drill, Physical Fitness, Academics, Orienteering, and community service while building additional competitive teams and leadership opportunities for the future.
Prerequisites:
- Associate's Degree or obtain a degree within the first year of hire.
- Current NJROTC Instructor Certification.
- Current Tennessee teaching certificate.
Special Knowledge/Skills/Requirements:
- General knowledge of curriculum and instruction.
- Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Compliant with traditional military standards of decorum and personal appearance.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of district's curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required.
- Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for difference in student learning styles.
- Present subject matter according to applicable guidelines established by Tennessee Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
- Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
- Conduct assessment of student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities.
- Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
- Work with other members of staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements.
- Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process.
- Help students analyze and improve study methods and habits.
- Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
- Assume responsibility for NJROTC extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside NJROTC activities approved by the campus principal.
- Be a positive role model for students, support mission of school district.
- Create classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
- Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Assist in selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
- Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, and community members.
- Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
- Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
- Participate in staff development activities to improve job related skills.
- Keep informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
- Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
- Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
Duties and Responsibilities specified in the Naval Service Training Command's current Regulations for the Citizenship Development Program when assigned by the Senior Naval Science Instructor:
- Wear the uniform prescribed by the SNSI and principal while teaching and other appropriate times
- Instruct students in military drill
- Write/update lesson plans for the NJROTC curriculum and other lesson preparation requirements
- Mentor cadets and assist with higher education or employment opportunities and goals
- Requisition all government furnished equipment (includes uniforms, training aids, books, drill rifles, air rifles, and organizational equipment
- Maintain Navy financial accounts of operating budget
- Prepare financial vouchers to the Navy for reimbursement of expenditures to the school, made in support of the NJROTC program
- Arrange for cleaning and tailoring of uniforms
- Survey old and worn uniforms and other government property
- Perform simple preventive maintenance of training aids and devices
- Inventory control of all government furnished equipment/materials
- Ensure proper physical security of all government furnished equipment/materials
- Plan extracurricular activities for the NJROTC unit (including color/honor guard ceremonies, competitive teams' events, field trips, Leadership Training camps, ship cruises
- Prepare periodic reports on program administration and logistics
- Keep current and abreast of new developments and organizations within the Navy
- Assess unit progress to assure NJROTC program objectives are met
- Attend Navy-sponsored training to keep abreast of current requirements of program management
- Take courses of instruction to improve teaching abilities
- Establish rapport with school counselors and faculty members
- Make annual presentations of the NJROTC program to students at feeder schools for recruiting new cadets into the program
- Establish contact with civic groups to obtain their recognition and support of the NJROTC unit
- Immediately informing school officials and NSTC-CD, of any disciplinary actions against, and changes in, employment of NJROTC instructors
- Submit to NSTC-CD, copies of news releases, transcripts, and/or narrative descriptions of radio and television broadcast of national interest
