Job description

Description:

The Poultry Nutritionist – Layers is a science-driven, consultative role at the intersection of nutrition, research, customer partnership, and commercial innovation. This position brings advanced expertise in layer nutrition to bear on real-world production challenges – delivering formulation services, technical guidance, and evidence-based recommendations that measurably improve flock performance and producer profitability.

You will serve as a trusted advisor to egg producers, feed mills, and integrated operations while collaborating closely with Sales, Product Development, Research, and Marketing teams. This is not just a technical role – it is a strategic position for a PhD-level scientist who is equally at home in a feed mill, a boardroom, and a data dashboard, and who embraces innovation as a tool to deliver exceptional outcomes for every customer.

Core Responsibilities

Commercial Impact & Customer Engagement

  • Identify and develop relationships with prospective customers, positioning Devenish’s nutritional consultation and feed formulation services as a measurable competitive advantage.
  • Deliver expert nutritional consultation and precision diet formulation services to a portfolio of layer customers, tailored to flock performance goals, production systems, and operational realities.
  • Partner closely with Devenish Veterinarians and Account Managers to provide technical selling support, co-develop customer proposals, and strengthen confidence in Devenish’s product and service offerings.
  • Gather and synthesize industry and competitive intelligence to inform Product Development, Research, and Marketing – proactively identifying opportunities to differentiate Devenish’s portfolio.
  • Mentor and develop junior nutritionists and account team members, building internal capability around layer nutrition best practices.

Technical & Nutritional Operations

  • Develop and maintain deep, current knowledge of Devenish’s full product portfolio – understanding the science and commercial value behind each technology, with emphasis on layer-specific solutions (hen day production, egg quality, feed conversion, gut health, bone integrity).
  • Support feed formulators with the development of layer diets, ration balancing, and production closeout analysis.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with operations and customer service teams to ensure seamless, high-quality customer experiences.
  • Identify and evaluate new product or service opportunities that address unmet customer needs in the layer segment.

Research & Product Development

  • Actively participate in poultry technical and R&D planning meetings, helping define research priorities aligned to market needs and layer customer insights.
  • Collaborate with Marketing, Sales, and Technical teams to create accurate, compelling, and science-backed marketing materials and product usage guidelines.
  • Contribute to broader product development initiatives in partnership with the Devenish Nutrition team, leveraging field observations and customer data to guide innovation.
  • Develop clear, practical product usage guidelines that empower customers and field teams to achieve optimal, repeatable results.

Technology as a Competitive Advantage:

At Devenish, we believe the best nutritionists are also skilled innovators – professionals who see digital tools not as overhead, but as force multipliers for customer impact. In this role, you will be expected to:

  • Utilize advanced feed formulation software and modeling platforms to build data-backed nutritional programs tailored to each layer operation.
  • Engage customers through virtual consultations, digital reporting, and real-time performance dashboards to provide a responsive, modern service experience.
  • Stay current with precision poultry technologies – including flock monitoring systems, egg quality analytics, and feed formulation programs  – and integrate them into your advisory practice.
  • Share field and trial data back into Devenish’s internal systems to continuously improve product performance benchmarks and customer-facing reporting.

Administrative & Reporting Expectations:

  • Maintain accurate records of customer interactions, diet formulations, trial data, and market intelligence using Devenish’s internal platforms.
  • Submit regular performance summaries and territory updates as defined by the Poultry Technical Director.
  • Utilize company-provided digital tools for internal communication, sample tracking, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Participate in product training, industry events, and Devenish team meetings to remain at the forefront of layer nutrition and poultry industry developments.

What We Offer:

  • A collaborative, innovation-driven culture built on science, integrity, and partnership.
  • Competitive base salary plus performance-based incentives.
  • Full benefits package including health, dental, vision, and retirement.
  • Vehicle allowance plus fuel reimbursement for business travel.
  • Travel and expense support for customer visits, industry events, and field work.
  • Ongoing professional development, product training, and access to Devenish’s global R&D resources.
  • A genuine opportunity to grow your career alongside a company shaping the future of animal nutrition

Requirements:

Education & Experience

  • Ph.D. in Nutrition, Poultry Science, Animal Science or a closely related field required.
  • Demonstrated expertise in layer nutrition, diet formulation, and flock performance optimization across diverse production systems.
  • Experience working in or alongside commercial layer operations – you understand the producer’s perspective and can translate science into practice.
  • Established network of contacts within the commercial egg, pullet, or integrated layer industry is a strong asset.

Core Skills & Attributes

  • Exceptional communicator – confident presenting complex nutritional science clearly to producers, nutritionists, sales teams, and executives alike.
  • Strong commercial acumen – ability to identify opportunities, support the sales process, and build lasting client relationships.
  • Genuine enthusiasm for leveraging technology – from precision formulation platforms and data analytics to emerging Agri-tech tools – to anticipate customer needs and consistently exceed expectations.
  • Self-directed with outstanding organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple customer engagements simultaneously.
  • Team-oriented with a collaborative, solutions-first mindset.

Technology & Tools

  • Proficiency with commercial feed formulation software (e.g., Concept-5, BRILL, Format, or equivalent).
  • Comfort using digital collaboration and reporting tools (Microsoft Teams, Zoom, shared dashboards).
  • Ability to interpret and present data-driven performance reports to customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Openness – and genuine excitement – for adopting new Agri-tech and precision poultry tools as they emerge.
