What is a junior HVAC design engineer?

Junior HVAC Design Engineers are entry-level professionals who assist in designing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems for buildings. They work under the supervision of senior engineers to create layouts, select appropriate equipment, and ensure systems comply with safety and efficiency standards. Their responsibilities often include drafting plans using CAD software, performing load calculations, and collaborating with other engineering disciplines. This role provides foundational experience and knowledge for advancing within the HVAC engineering field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior HVAC design engineer?

To thrive as a Junior HVAC Design Engineer, you need a solid understanding of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and HVAC system design, typically supported by a degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, and HVAC load calculation software, as well as knowledge of industry codes and standards, is essential. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with teams and address client needs. These competencies are vital to ensure efficient, safe, and compliant HVAC solutions in building projects.

What are some common challenges faced by junior HVAC design engineers when transitioning from academic studies to real-world projects?

Junior HVAC Design Engineers often find that applying theoretical knowledge to practical, real-world projects can be challenging. Adapting to fast-paced project timelines, understanding complex building codes, and learning to use specialized design software are typical hurdles. Additionally, collaborating effectively with senior engineers, architects, and contractors requires strong communication and teamwork skills. Over time, hands-on experience and mentorship help bridge the gap between academic learning and industry expectations.

What is the difference between Junior Hvac Design Engineer vs HVAC Design Technician?

Job description

ABOUT US

MSC (Mechanical Service Corporation) is a leading mechanical service company specializing in complex HVAC, process cooling, and building automation systems for commercial, industrial, and institutional environments. As a recognized leader in the Northeast region since 1976, we are the technical authority on complex HVAC, process cooling, and building automation systems, with a practice that spans advanced diagnostics, design/build, retrofit and replacement, and long-term service.

JOB SUMMARY

MSC is seeking an experienced HVAC Design Engineer to lead design/build and retrofit project development. This is a technical role focused on originating and developing custom mechanical solutions for building owners in commercial, industrial, and institutional settings. The ideal candidate possesses the technical depth to assess existing conditions in the field, develop viable mechanical solutions, produce clear design documentation, and prepare accurate estimates covering equipment, materials, and labor.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Design & Engineering

  • Conduct site surveys of existing mechanical systems to assess conditions and define project scope

  • Develop original HVAC and process cooling system designs for commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities, with the ability to define scope and solutions independently where no plans or specifications exist

  • Perform load calculations and equipment sizing using industry-standard tools

  • Select appropriate equipment and specify systems, including air handling units, chillers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, piping, controls, and related components

  • Produce design drawings, schematics, and supporting documentation sufficient to define scope and support installation

Estimating and Proposal Development

  • Prepare detailed project estimates encompassing equipment, materials, and labor

  • Develop clear, professional proposals tailored to direct-to-owner sales opportunities

  • Collaborate with the sales team to present and refine proposals as needed

Project Coordination & Technical Support

  • Transition awarded projects to operations and field teams with thorough documentation and handoff

  • Provide ongoing technical support to field and office teams during project execution

  • Conduct site visits as needed to verify conditions and support installation

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent combination of technical education and field experience

  • 5-10 years of experience in HVAC design/build work in commercial, industrial, or institutional environments

  • Demonstrated ability to develop mechanical system solutions without existing plans or specifications

  • Proficiency in load calculation and equipment selection software (HAP, Trace 700, or equivalent)

  • Experience producing design drawings using CAD or similar tools

  • Strong estimating skills, with the ability to accurately quantify equipment, material, and labor costs

  • Solid working knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including ASHRAE and local mechanical codes

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Resourceful, self-directed, and comfortable managing multiple priorities simultaneously

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license a plus, but not required

SALARY & BENEFITS

  • Salary $140,000 - $160,000

  • Comprehensive benefits package including paid time off, employer-subsidized health insurance, 401(k) with match, and long-term and short-term disability insurance

  • Opportunities for professional growth and development

  • Collaborative and supportive work environment

  • Train directly with owner/lead PE
