What is the difference between Junior Control Systems Engineer vs Control Systems Engineer?

AspectJunior Control Systems EngineerControl Systems Engineer
QualificationsBachelor's in Engineering, some experienceBachelor's or higher, more experience
Work EnvironmentEntry-level projects, supervised tasksDesign, development, and troubleshooting of control systems
ResponsibilitiesAssisting in system setup and testingLeading system design and implementation

The main difference lies in experience and responsibility level. Junior Control Systems Engineers typically assist with projects and have less experience, while Control Systems Engineers handle more complex tasks and lead projects. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and are common in industrial and manufacturing sectors.

What are Junior Control Systems Engineers?

Junior Control Systems Engineers are entry-level professionals who assist in designing, developing, and maintaining control systems used to operate machinery and processes in industries such as manufacturing, energy, and automation. They typically work under the guidance of senior engineers, helping with tasks like programming controllers, troubleshooting system issues, and ensuring safety and efficiency. These engineers often use software tools to create and test control logic, and may also be involved in installation and commissioning of systems. The role is ideal for recent graduates with an engineering degree who are seeking to gain practical experience in the field.

How does a Junior Control Systems Engineer typically collaborate with other team members during a project?

As a Junior Control Systems Engineer, you will frequently work alongside senior engineers, project managers, and technicians to design, implement, and test automation solutions. Collaboration often involves participating in team meetings, reviewing design documents, and integrating your work with hardware and software developed by others. You'll also coordinate with commissioning teams during on-site installations and may support troubleshooting activities, providing valuable learning opportunities and exposure to multiple aspects of the project lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Junior Control Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Control Systems Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or mechanical engineering, with knowledge of automation principles and control theory, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with PLC programming, SCADA systems, and industry-standard software like MATLAB or AutoCAD is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork make candidates stand out in this role. These competencies are crucial for developing reliable automation solutions and ensuring the safe, efficient operation of industrial processes.

We are at the forefront of future engineering technologies, with solutions that ensure the success of our clients in key industries that are shaping the future of the world we live in.

ANDRITZ has an immediate opportunity for a skilled Instrumentation and Control Systems Engineer to support the design, specification, implementation, commissioning, and troubleshooting of industrial instrumentation and control systems. In this role, you will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary project teams to design and implement robust, reliable, and maintainable instrumentation and control systems for complex industrial applications.

You will play a key role in instrumentation engineering, PLC/DCS programming and integration, supporting procurement and vendor activities, and providing commissioning and start-up support, while ensuring alignment with technical standards, safety requirements, and customer expectations. This position is ideal for an engineer who combines strong system-level expertise with hands-on experience and thrives in dynamic project environments.

What You Will Be Doing

Here's an overview of your responsibilities and how you can leverage your expertise:

  • Perform site assessments and evaluate existing instrumentation and control systems to define scope, risks, and technical approach
  • Specify and select field instrumentation including flow, pressure, temperature, level, density, and analytical measurement devices.
  • Develop control system designs, including system architecture, control philosophies, and functional specifications (PLC/DCS/SCADA)
  • Design, configure, and support PLC, DCS, and HMI/SCADA systems, including control logic, interlocks, and alarm management strategies
  • Prepare and maintain engineering deliverables such as instrument datasheets, material requisitions, control narratives, I/O lists, control system architecture diagrams, and functional design specifications
  • Coordinate control system integration, including I/O assignments, communications, and interfaces with third-party systems
  • Support procurement activities by reviewing vendor packages, technical submittals, and FAT documentation
  • Collaborate with process, electrical, mechanical, and construction teams to ensure alignment between control strategies and system design
  • Provide field support during construction, commissioning, and start-up, including instrument calibration, system checkout, loop verification, troubleshooting, and performance validation
  • Develop and execute commissioning and acceptance documentation, including FAT/SAT procedures and system turnover documentation
  • Ensure control systems are implemented and commissioned in accordance with project requirements, standards, and best practices
  • Troubleshoot field instrumentation issues and recommend corrective actions.
  • Adhere to company safety standards, including the ANDRITZ Life-Saving Rules, and promote a strong safety culture
  • Demonstrate and reinforce #1ANDRITZway core values and behaviors in all aspects of work

 What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Instrumentation, Electrical, Automation, or Controls Engineering (or related discipline)
  • Minimum of five (5) years' experience in instrumentation and control systems engineering within industrial environments
  • Strong experience with PLC, DCS, and/or SCADA systems, including configuration, programming, and system integration
  • Experience specifying and developing instrumentation and control system deliverables such as data sheets, functional design specifications, control narratives, and I/O lists
  • Proven experience supporting installation, commissioning and start-up of instrumentation and control systems.
  • Solid understanding of industrial control system architecture, communications, and interfaces
  • Experience with instrument calibration and troubleshooting
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within project teams
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally to support site activities
  • Fluency in English is required; Arabic language skills are a strong asset

 Nice to Have

  • Experience in mining, mineral processing, or other heavy industrial environments
  • Hands-on experience with major control platforms (e.g., Yokogawa, Siemens, Rockwell/Allen-Bradley, ABB, Emerson, Honeywell)
  • Experience participating in FAT/SAT and commissioning of instrumentation and control systems
  • Understanding of industrial networks and communication protocols (e.g., OPC, Modbus, Ethernet/IP, Profibus)
  • Knowledge of functional safety concepts (e.g., SIL / IEC 61511)
  • Exposure to advanced control strategies or optimization systems is an asset
