Junior Architect

Woodruff Mayer Architecture, Inc. is a full-service, licensed, residential architecture firm specializing in thoughtfully designed homes, additions, remodels, and Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs). We are committed to solving complex design challenges through practical, creative, and code-compliant solutions while providing exceptional service from concept through construction administration.

Position Summary

We are seeking a motivated Junior Architect (licensed or not) with 3+ years of professional experience who enjoys residential architecture and wants to take an active role in project development from initial design through construction documentation. This position offers the opportunity to work on custom homes, remodels, additions, and ADUs while collaborating closely with architects, consultants, clients, and drafting staff.

The ideal candidate is highly organized, technically proficient, communicates well in written and verbal form, and eager to grow professionally while helping lead project production and mentoring junior drafting team members.

Responsibilities

  • Support the design and documentation of residential architecture projects through all phases of development.

  • Prepare design studies, conceptual drawings, permit sets, and construction documents.

  • Coordinate with consultants, engineers, jurisdictions, and project stakeholders.

  • Apply California Building Code, zoning regulations, and local planning requirements to produce compliant designs.

  • Work closely with project teams to meet project schedules, milestones, and deadlines.

  • Lead and mentor a team of drafters while reviewing drawing quality and consistency.

  • Participate in client meetings, project coordination, and design discussions.

  • Analyze existing structures to determine best solutions for new designs.

  • Assist with project permitting and respond to plan check comments as needed.

  • Maintain accurate project documentation and organization throughout each phase of work.

  • Address city corrections and facilitate project approval through cities

  • Maintain professional communication skills in written and verbal forms.

  • Visit job sites periodically with responsibilities related to observing conditions and acquiring information.

  • Conduct research on materials, building codes, city requirements, and design innovations.

  • Maintain a positive and professional attitude

  • Assist with general office tasks as needed.

  • Stay up-to-date on industry trends and best practices.

  • Participate in and occasionally conduct client meetings and presentations

Qualifications

Required

  • 3+ years of professional experience in residential architecture with ability to start, work on, and complete a project.

  • Strong residential design and problem-solving skills.

  • Experience preparing construction documents.

  • Strong understanding of building codes and residential construction practices.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to learn company standards and practices quickly and apply those to future projects without constant need for reminders.

  • Ability to work independently and as a team.

  • Ability to analyze and complete construction drawing sets as part of the architecture team.

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational abilities.

  • Strong time management skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.

  • Ability to perform physical labor related to the position

  • Can climb a ladder, kneel, lift and carry up to 50 lbs. (Reasonable accommodations may be made.)

Compensation

Expected Salary: $72,000–$115,000 annually, depending on experience, licensure, and qualifications.
