EMPLOYEE CLASSIFICATION: 12 Month Full-Time (2080 annual hours), Staff, Exempt
POSITION SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
The Network Engineer designs, installs, and maintains the university's network infrastructure ensuring stable, secure, and high-performing connectivity across campus systems. This role also coordinates vendor implementation efforts and maintains detailed documentation to support change management and operational continuity.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:
  • Design, build, deploy, and administer complex network, wireless, and network security environments to support organizational needs.
  • Evaluate and recommend improvements to network performance, capacity, and scalability, optimizing for future growth and technological advancements.
  • Identify and implement network automation opportunities to streamline operations and increase efficiency.
  • Coordinate and execute network changes in compliance with established change management procedures to minimize disruptions.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive as-built documentation and network operations reports, ensuring accuracy and accessibility.
  • Collaborate effectively with partners and vendors to deploy new infrastructure and provide operational support.
  • Troubleshoot network issues and resolve support tickets promptly, coordinating with maintenance personnel as needed.
  • Provide on-call support during off-hours, holidays, and weekends on a rotational basis to maintain continuous network availability.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum 7 years of hands-on experience with network infrastructure and systems.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience managing and designing network infrastructure, including routing, switching, wireless, and network security in a medium to large network environment.
  • Proven expertise with common networking protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, VPNs, etc.).
  • Experience configuring and supporting firewalls, as well as wireless and wired network installations.
  • Demonstrated ability to use network monitoring and performance tools.
  • Familiarity with scripting for automation tasks (e.g. in Python, Bash, PowerShell) is preferred.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and analytical skills, with a methodical approach to problem-solving.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively across departments.
REQUIRED MENTAL/PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
  • Able to work in environmentally diverse settings (outdoors and in data closets, construction sites, and office environments).
  • Able to install equipment (tasks which may involve climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, handling, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing). Objects being manipulated may weigh up to 100 pounds and vary in size from small screws to large equipment racks.
  • Able to drive a vehicle (on-road and off-road).
  • Able to use hand tools (screw drivers, hammers, wrenches) and electronic instruments (voltmeter, breakout box, data cable tester).
  • Able to see and read screen layouts and hardcopy printouts.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS:
Work is generally performed in an office environment on campus.
Conference and training attendance might necessitate air travel or extended
vehicular travel.
