PURPOSE OF JOB
The Materials Engineer is key to securing continued production across Asphalt, Shingles, and Components by qualifying dual raw material sources. This position plays a key role in the completion of materials focused projects across roofing, including the development of qualification plans, required screening and testing, plant trials, data analysis, and implementation of solutions.
The Materials Engineer will collaborate across Roofing Science & Technology, Operations, Sourcing, Product Stewardship, and Product organizations to assure product quality and availability.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
MATERIALS TECHNICAL LEADERSHIP: PLANT TRIALING, QUALIFICATION PROTOCOL & TEST METHOD DEVELOPMENT
  • Partner with sourcing professionals to screen materials in the lab prior to plant trialing for qualification.
  • Lead raw material dual sourcing/supply security qualifications using already established qualification protocols.
  • Coordinate plant trials and required product testing, analyze data, draw conclusions, and make recommendations for trial material use. Identify challenges and obstacles to qualification. Identify and implement risk mitigation plans.
  • Apply knowledge of material and scientific fundamentals and experimental design in projects.
  • Communicate technical results to project teams. Author summary reports on technical findings, when applicable.
  • Collaborate across Roofing Science & Technology to develop materials qualification protocols and new test methods where protocols or protocol requirements do not already exist.
  • Proactively mitigate supply security/dual sourcing needs by ensuring supplier material specifications meet the current production needs, and collaborating with stakeholders (Sourcing, Lab, Pilots, etc)

PROJECT MANAGEMENT
  • Manage 2-3 materials/dual sourcing projects across the Roofing Division, which allow for rapid response to critical supply shortages and prevent or minimize any lost production.
  • Lead dual sourcing/materials qualification projects from Sourcing concept through material qualification, including successful handoff to manufacturing.
  • Define, manage and communicate the scope, timeline and resources needed using project management methodologies
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate risks to effectively manage changes throughout the projects.
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with people across different functions in the organization.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Science field or Associates Degree with 5+ years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated use of fundamental engineering and business principles to deliver a desired outcome.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and meet key milestones, to work and communicate effectively with people across different functions of the organization, and to technically contribute to the development of solutions.
  • Ability to travel domestically up to 25-40% of the time (varies depending on project need).

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
  • Demonstrated project management effectiveness and tool usage in R&D and/or manufacturing environments is preferred (developing plant trials, communication plans, timelines, etc.).
  • Experience with statistics to drive data based decisions and develop customer-inspired test methods, as well as organizing and presenting data to key stakeholders
  • Multi-functional communication skills (ability to manage across functions from Operations, Sourcing, and other R&D functions).
