The Internship Patient Advocate Remote is an entry-level, temporary position designed for students or those gaining experience in patient advocacy, often remote. In contrast, a Patient Advocate is a more experienced role, potentially full-time, with broader responsibilities in assisting patients through healthcare processes. Both roles focus on patient support but differ mainly in experience level, duration, and work setting.

What are some common challenges faced by remote patient advocate interns, and how can they be addressed?

Remote patient advocate interns often encounter challenges such as building rapport with patients virtually, ensuring clear communication across digital platforms, and navigating confidential health information securely. To address these, it's important to utilize active listening techniques, familiarize yourself with telehealth tools, and follow HIPAA-compliant procedures for data privacy. Regular check-ins with your supervising advocate and collaboration with healthcare teams can also help you stay connected and supported while working remotely.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote internship patient advocate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Internship Patient Advocate, you generally need a background in healthcare or social work, strong organizational skills, and a genuine interest in patient rights and support. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems, telehealth platforms, and basic office software is typically required. Exceptional communication, empathy, and problem-solving abilities help interns effectively understand and address patient concerns. These skills ensure advocates can support patients remotely, navigate healthcare systems, and foster trust in challenging situations.

What does an internship patient advocate remote do?

An Internship Patient Advocate Remote assists patients in navigating the healthcare system, addressing concerns, and ensuring their rights are respected, all while working remotely. They may help patients understand their medical options, resolve billing issues, and communicate with healthcare providers. Interns in this role gain experience in patient advocacy, healthcare policy, and customer service, often under the guidance of experienced advocates. The remote aspect allows them to perform these duties virtually, using phone, email, and video calls.

We are living through a pivotal moment for reproductive and sexual health—and Hey Jane is uniquely positioned to help.

From day one, we've been committed to providing safe, discreet medication abortion treatment—and have helped more than 100,000 people get the care they need. Today, we offer a range of reproductive and sexual health care services from the comfort and convenience of your phone.  Our in-house clinical care team, composed of board certified doctors, advanced practice clinicians, nurses, and patient care advocates, is just a text message away. We’re committed to helping our patients get safe, discreet, judgment-free virtual health care, from a team that truly cares.

The team at Hey Jane is looking to expand our team by adding a detail oriented, human-centered, tech-savvy Patient Care Advocate with a background in medication abortion who can provide excellent customer service on a full-time basis.

This is a hybrid role with required in-clinic hours at our Oakland clinic. Initially, this team member will work 30 per week on-site and 10 hours remote. Expected start date in early August.

Schedule: 09:00am–07:00pm PT (10 hr shifts)

Workdays: Wednesday-Saturday (Wednesday-Friday in office, Saturday remote)

Compensation: $60,000-$62,000 annually, salaried with benefits (plus on-site and weekend differential pay)
Responsibilities
  • Answering patient questions related to treatment, logistics, and next steps
  • Troubleshooting patient concerns related to shipping, refunds, scheduling, and care coordination
  • Tracking patients through their care journey and ensuring timely follow-up
  • Checking, documenting, and reporting insurance eligibility information
  • Maintaining accurate documentation within the EMR while adhering to HIPAA and privacy standards
  • Balancing multiple priorities while staying grounded, communicative, and reliable to both patients and teammates
  • This role requires a high level of accuracy and follow-through. Small details directly impact patient care. We value team members who take pride in getting things right, asking clarifying questions, and closing loops.
Qualifications
  • Healthcare background (MA, PCA, CNA, or similar clinical or patient-facing role)  with 1+ years of experience in abortion care
  • Comfort working across both in-clinic and remote environments
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong triage skills, with the ability to make sound decisions in real time
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to deliver clear, empathetic guidance to patients in moments of stress or uncertainty
  • Skilled at using online tools and technology to deliver care and communicate with patients
  • Comfort in supporting patients with sensitive health issues, such as abortion and birth control
  •  Ability to navigate protocols, regulatory requirements, and organizational policies related to patient care and documentation
  • Experience providing trauma-informed care, demonstrated through the ability to slow down, adjust tone, and meet patients with steadiness and respect during moments of crisis
  • Eager to engage in constant process improvement to help refine tools and operations for improved care delivery
  • Strong ability to prioritize competing tasks, manage time thoughtfully, and communicate proactively with teammates about progress, changes, and follow-through
Bonus Points
  • Spanish language proficiency
  • Prior remote or hybrid work experience
  • Experience working in a startup or fast-growing organization
• Compensation: $60-$62k + equity + Weekend/On-Site differential pay
• Flexible vacation policy
• Health, dental, and vision insurance with FSA
