Job description

Description

Summary: Catholic Homes New York is dedicated to the belief that having a home is a sacred human right. With a portfolio of approximately 3,000 affordable units, we specialize in developing, constructing, and acquiring housing for families, seniors, and supportive populations. We are committed to the long-term stability of our communities by providing self-funded social services and actively growing our portfolio through new construction and strategic acquisitions.

Internship Overview:
This undergraduate internship provides a hands-on, comprehensive experience across the full lifecycle of affordable housing. You will work directly with the Catholic Homes team across three key pillars: Housing Development, Asset Management, and Mission.
This role is designed to expose students to the real-world complexities of developing and managing mission-driven housing. You will participate in site visits to active construction projects, attend design meetings, and gain insight into how non-profit developers help solve the housing crisis.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Housing Development (Real Estate Strategy):
    • Support the development team on active transactions (e.g., closings, requisitions, and design meetings).
    • Conduct market research and demographic analysis for potential new sites.
    • Join site visits to inspect construction progress and existing building conditions.
  • Asset Management (Financial & Compliance):
    • Analyze property performance data to identify trends in utility usage and operating expenses.
    • Assist in the preparation of annual operating budgets and financial summaries for board review.
    • Learn the basics of Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) compliance and regulatory reporting.
  • Mission (Community Impact):
    • Collaborate with social service staff to support resident programming, track service delivery outcomes, and understand how supportive housing model’s function.
    • Participate in internal reviews of our "Faith-Based" initiatives to see how non-profit ownership creates value beyond the bottom line.
    • Participate in "Lunch & Learn" sessions with senior leadership to discuss career paths in non-profit development.

Salary: $25 Hourly

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are generally 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday - Friday. Additional weekend and evening hours may be required to meet agency deadlines.

The demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • Travel at least 20% of the time using public transportation or vehicle, traverse city streets, occasionally ascend/descend stairs, and be exposed to outside weather conditions.
  • Remain stationary using a computer at least 50% of the time, in meetings and/or events.
  • Carry a laptop to offsite work locations.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment i.e. copier, fax, scanner, postage machine and printer.
  • Ability to use and respond to phone calls.
