What is the difference between Internship Human Systems Engineering vs Human Factors Intern?

AspectInternship Human Systems EngineeringHuman Factors Intern
Required credentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate in engineering, human factors, or related fieldsOften pursuing or recent graduate in psychology, human factors, or ergonomics
Work environmentEngineering teams, product design, systems developmentResearch labs, usability testing, product design teams
Industry usageTechnology, aerospace, defense, healthcareConsumer electronics, software, transportation
Comparison focusDesigning and optimizing complex systems with human interactionStudying and improving user experience and usability

Internship Human Systems Engineering and Human Factors Intern roles overlap in understanding human interaction with systems. However, Human Systems Engineering focuses more on designing and integrating complex systems, while Human Factors Interns concentrate on usability and user experience. Both roles are essential in industries like technology and aerospace, often sharing similar educational backgrounds and work environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Human Systems Engineering, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Human Systems Engineering, you generally need a background in human factors, psychology, engineering, or a related field, often supported by current enrollment in a relevant degree program. Familiarity with user research methods, data analysis tools (such as SPSS or MATLAB), and human-centered design software is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, communication skills, and adaptability help interns collaborate effectively and contribute innovative solutions. These skills are crucial for designing systems that optimize human performance, safety, and user experience.

What types of projects can I expect to work on during a Human Systems Engineering internship?

During a Human Systems Engineering internship, you will likely participate in projects that focus on optimizing interactions between humans and complex systems. Typical assignments may include conducting user research, assisting with ergonomic assessments, and supporting the design or evaluation of interfaces for products or processes. Interns often collaborate closely with engineers, designers, and end-users to collect data, analyze user feedback, and recommend improvements. This hands-on experience helps you build practical skills while contributing meaningfully to ongoing projects and learning how multidisciplinary teams operate in real-world settings.

What is an Internship in Human Systems Engineering?

An Internship in Human Systems Engineering is a temporary position designed for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in the interdisciplinary field that focuses on optimizing the relationship between humans and complex systems, such as technology, machinery, or environments. Interns work alongside professionals to conduct research, analyze human behavior, and help design systems that enhance usability, safety, and efficiency. These internships typically involve hands-on projects, data collection, user testing, and may contribute to developing products or processes that improve human interaction with systems. The experience provides valuable skills for future careers in human factors, ergonomics, or related fields.

We are singularly focused on designing, building, and operating a fleet of multi-purpose commercial planetary rovers to extend and enhance humanity's presence in the solar system. We are seeking motivated, creative, and exceptional people to join our world-class team.
As an intern with the Lunar Terrain Vehicle Services (LTVS) team working on providing rover services to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), you will play a key role in developing the systems engineering products and plans for the program. Your responsibilities will include developing Verification and Validation (V&V) plans for LTV subsystems, developing infrastructure and processes for Astrolab's requirements and verification tracking systems, and supporting the Human Systems Integration team in their products. You will work closely with the Systems Engineering and Integration (SEI) team as well as hardware responsible engineers (REs). You will report to the Astrolab LTVS Certification Lead.
This internship opportunity will begin in spring or summer 2026 and will last between 3 to 6 months.

  • Work with Jira or other systems engineering tools to implement necessary processes to manage the V&V process, deliver key verification deliverables to NASA, and track the progress of the effort
  • Implement additional tooling (scripts, report generation, etc.) to enable clarity in review for Astrolab and NASA team members
  • Implement Interface Control Documents (ICDs) for the additional NASA systems LTV will interface with
  • Support the creation and iteration of deliverables to meet NASA instructions.
  • Participate in the Human Systems Integration (HSI) workflow, including collaborating with REs on flowing human systems requirement implications to their systems; planning, executing, and post-processing findings from human-in-the-loop (HITL) evaluations; managing & tracking human factors design feedback/concerns from ticket creation through closure; using Figma and other rapid prototyping tools to produce interactive user interface (UI) wireframes, and supporting cadenced discussions with stakeholders such as Safety, Suit Vendor, and NASA to ensure a safe & efficient user experience (UX) for our astronauts

What you'll bring:
  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a STEM discipline degree
  • Previous experience with space or robotics systems, including basic knowledge of key components of the system
  • Strong written communication skills
