About JerseySTEM
All JerseySTEM roles are pro-bono (unpaid) positions.
JerseySTEM is a mission-driven professional network of pro-bono contributors dedicated to improving access to STEM education and career pathways for underserved middle school girls in New Jersey.
Members contribute their professional skills and leverage their networks in service of the organization's gender-equity agenda.
Membership is a minimum six-month commitment of approximately six flexible hours per week and includes a $100 refundable deposit, returned after six months of active membership. K-12 educators, retirees, veterans, interns, and students are exempt from the deposit.
Overview
This is a pro-bono position.
JerseySTEM is seeking an experienced Atlassian Tools Subject Matter Expert to support and optimize our use of Atlassian products, primarily Jira, Jira Service Management (Service Desk), and Confluence. This Pro-bono professional will serve as the go-to expert for Atlassian tooling, helping improve project tracking, collaboration, service workflows, and automation across the organization.
This role reports directly to Productivity Stack Owner and works closely with cross-functional teams to understand needs, recommend best practices, and implement effective, sustainable solutions.
Responsibilities
  • Serve as the subject matter expert (SME) for Atlassian tools which include Jira DataCenter, Jira Service Management, and Confluence DataCenter.
  • Establish baseline and ongoing operational and value metrics for Atlassian tools, including:
    • Usage and adoption by teams
    • Effectiveness of workflows and service processes
    • Overall value delivered to JerseySTEM
  • Analyze and report on how Jira, Jira Service Management, and Confluence are used across the organization to help leadership understand current-state usage and opportunities for improvement.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand project, service, and documentation needs
  • Configure, customize, and optimize Jira projects, workflows, dashboards, reports, and permissions
  • Implement and manage automations to improve efficiency and reduce manual effort
  • Integrate Atlassian tools with third-party applications (e.g., collaboration, reporting, CRM tools)
  • Support and enhance Jira Service Management processes, including request types, queues, SLAs, and automations
  • Provide guidance, best practices, and light training to users as needed
  • Identify opportunities to improve visibility, collaboration, and operational efficiency through Atlassian tooling
  • Ensure solutions are scalable, user-friendly, and aligned with organizational goals

Qualifications
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience managing and administering the Atlassian suite, including Jira, ServiceDesk, Confluence
  • Proven experience integrating Atlassian tools with third-party applications
  • Strong expertise in automation within the Atlassian ecosystem
  • Solid understanding of project management and service management best practices
  • Experience gathering requirements and translating business needs into technical solutions
  • Ability to work independently and communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders
Nice-to-Have Qualifications
  • Experience with migrations from Atlassian to other platforms (or vice versa)
  • Atlassian Cloud experience.
  • Atlassian certifications
  • Experience supporting nonprofit or pro-bono members based organizations
  • Familiarity with marketplace apps, APIs, or advanced integrations
Time Commitment
  • 6 hours per week
  • 6-12 month commitment preferred to ensure continuity and meaningful impact
