What is an internal controls coordinator?

Internal Controls Coordinators are professionals responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring an organization's internal control systems to ensure compliance with regulations and to mitigate risks. They work across departments to assess processes, identify weaknesses, and recommend improvements to safeguard assets and ensure accurate financial reporting. Their role is crucial in preventing fraud, detecting errors, and ensuring that company operations adhere to policies and legal requirements.

To thrive as an Internal Controls Coordinator, you need a strong background in accounting, auditing, and risk management, often supported by a bachelor’s degree in finance or a related field. Familiarity with internal control frameworks like COSO, audit management software, and relevant certifications such as CPA or CIA is highly valuable. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are essential soft skills for identifying control weaknesses and collaborating with stakeholders.
