Interns in specialized fields such as powertrain control engineering, especially those with advanced skills in control systems, software, and hardware, can earn higher stipends, particularly at top-tier firms or during summer programs. Compensation varies by industry, location, and company size, but competitive internships often include additional benefits and potential for full-time employment offers.

What is the difference between Intern Powertrain Control Engineer vs Intern Automotive Software Engineer?

AspectIntern Powertrain Control Engineer

Intern Powertrain Control Engineers focus on developing and testing control systems for vehicle powertrains, including engines and transmissions. They typically work in automotive manufacturing or research environments, requiring knowledge of control algorithms, engine systems, and automotive hardware. Intern Automotive Software Engineers, on the other hand, develop software for vehicle systems, including infotainment and driver assistance, often overlapping in automotive industry settings. Both roles may require programming skills and automotive knowledge, but their focus areas differ within vehicle technology development.

What is a controls engineering intern?

A controls engineering intern is a student or entry-level professional gaining hands-on experience in designing, testing, and implementing control systems for vehicles or machinery. The role often involves working with software tools like MATLAB or Simulink and understanding control theory principles under the supervision of experienced engineers.

What are the big 4 internships?

The 'Big 4' internships typically refer to summer internship programs offered by the four largest professional services firms: Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Ernst & Young (EY), and KPMG. These internships provide experience in audit, consulting, tax, and advisory services and are highly competitive for students pursuing careers in accounting, finance, or consulting, including roles like Intern Powertrain Control Engineer if aligned with finance or consulting within automotive firms.

Is $20 an hour good for an internship?

For an Intern Powertrain Control Engineer, $20 an hour is around or slightly above the average internship pay in many regions, especially for technical roles requiring basic engineering skills and knowledge of control systems. Compensation can vary based on location, company size, and required skills, but this rate generally reflects entry-level or early-stage internships in engineering fields.

Job description

Powertrain Performance Test Engineer
As a powertrain performance test engineer you will be part of a team that is responsible for calibrating vehicle parameters that have a direct impact on the acceleration characteristics, fuel economy, and powertrain behavior of Hyundai/Kia/Genesis vehicles for the North American market. In this position, you will support lead engineers in defining and achieving drivability and performance targets through in-vehicle testing, calibration, voice-of-customer research, and subjective evaluation. Subject propulsion systems include internal combustion, hybrid-electric, and battery-electric, in a variety of vehicle segments.
What You Will Do
  • Instrument test vehicles with a variety of sensors (accelerometers, thermocouples, microphones, etc.) to collect data for characterizing and monitoring the vehicle's performance and drivability.
  • Identify drivability strengths and weaknesses. Perform root cause analysis with measured data to determine the powertrain control strategies responsible for the identified behaviors.
  • Plan & participate in test trips where vehicles are evaluated in a wide range of on-road driving conditions and environments.
  • Work with lead engineers to validate drivability strategies for the best match to US market expectations.
  • Perform powertrain performance testing and assist in the collection and analysis of vehicle data.
  • Participate in drive events with a panel of engineers and evaluators where you will provide the perspective of a powertrain evaluator and provide context to the comments of other evaluators.
  • Create and present clear & concise project status and technical reports.
  • Able to work in a culturally diverse team environment and in harsh climate conditions (Winter -40F, Summer +120F, altitude up to 14,000 ft)
  • Travel up to 35%, domestically and internationally to support product development and testing

What You Will Bring to the Role
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field of study
  • 1+ years of relevant engineering experience; experience in the automotive industry preferred
  • Engineering internship experience
  • Good understanding of vehicle powertrain systems and vehicle dynamics
  • Experience with data acquisition systems
  • Experience with data analysis software including MATLAB
