Position Title: Transportation Operations Analysis & Development, Emerging Talent Intern
Hourly Rate: $19.00 (Undergraduate)
All internship positions are onsite and require regular, in-person attendance at the designated work location.
OVERVIEW OF DEPARTMENT:
Operations Analysis & Development Division (OADD) supports Road Operations and the Bus Command Center by using data, technology, and performance analysis to improve bus service reliability, safety, and customer experience. The department partners with operational, technology, and planning teams to develop tools, dashboards, and process improvements that help field staff and leadership make informed, real-time decisions.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Interns will gain hands-on exposure to transit operations, data analysis, and service management initiatives that directly impact daily bus service across NYC.
  • Creating reporting tools to support operational decision-making and improve bus performance.
  • Developing and enhancing applications to streamline the workflows of Bus Command Center Supervisors (e.g., using PowerApps).
  • Validating datasets to ensure accuracy, consistency, and integrity.
  • Documenting processes and mapping workflows to support digital transformation efforts.
  • Assisting with the analysis of bus service performance trends and identifying recurring operational issues using available data and dashboards.
  • Supporting user testing and feedback collection for new or enhanced digital tools used by the Bus Command Center and Road Operations staff.
  • Preparing presentation materials, summaries, and visualizations to communicate findings and recommendations to supervisors and managers.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams (Operations, MTAIT, Data & Analytics) to support pilot initiatives and continuous improvement efforts.

PROJECTS:
  • Optimization of the Bus Command Center Diversion Form using PowerApps to improve usability and functionality.
  • Creation and maintenance of reports using Power BI to monitor key performance indicators and support data-driven decisions.
  • Validation and deployment of new features in internal applications like Bus Trek and Yard Trek, used to track real-time bus and yard operations.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is a must.
  • The candidate should possess organizational, analytical and communication skills.
  • The candidate should be able to work well under pressure and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • The candidate should have a keen eye for detail and be able to work independently while being an active team player.
  • Familiarity or coursework in computer programming, data analytics, or application development.
  • Interest in public transit, operations, or technology-driven process improvement.

REQUIRED EDUCATION:
  • Matriculated in an undergraduate program in good standing with at least 2.5 GPA AND/OR matriculated in a graduate program in good standing with at least 2.8 GPA
  • Major(s) Preferred: Computer Science/Information Systems or Transportation, or related field.
