About the Position

The Director of Resident Health & Wellness provides clinical leadership, oversight and regulatory compliance for nursing-related services at The View Alexandria, a Virginia Assisted Living Facility. This role ensures that resident care, medication management, infection prevention, team member training, and health-related documentation comply with Goodwin Living policy, Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) regulations [22VAC40-73] and applicable provisions of the Code of Virginia governing assisted living facilities. The Director of Resident Health & Wellness serves as the clinical leader supporting resident health, safety and regulatory compliance, and provides direction to the interdisciplinary team to ensure delivery of high-quality services that do not exceed the scope permitted in an assisted living setting. The individual supports and promotes the philosophy of person-centered care and fosters an empowered work force.

Estimated Salary: $115k plus a sign-on bonus

 

Key Duties

  • Provides clinical leadership and oversight of all nursing-related and health-related services offered by the facility within the scope of an assisted living license.
  • Partners with Sales team to determine if prospective residents meet clinical admission criteria for community in a timely manner. 
  • Oversees resident health monitoring, including review of physical exams, fall risk ratings, and special health care needs documentation.
  • Collaborates with physicians, pharmacies, families, and external providers to coordinate resident care services within the scope of an assisted living license.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary care planning consistent with each resident’s Uniform Assessment Instrument (UAI) and individualized service plan (ISP).
  • Ensures residents receive care consistent with individualized service plans and physician orders. 
  • Partners with Administration and Social Work to facilitate transitions to alternate levels of care when residents’ clinical needs cannot be met in an assisted living setting.
  • Oversees the facility’s Medication Management Program including implementation, monitoring, and compliance with the Medication Management Plan as approved by VDSS and other approved policies and procedures.
  • Supervises and provides regular clinical competency validation (i.e., med pass observations) and ongoing training for medication aides and licensed team members.
  • Monitors compliance with medication-related policies and VA Board of Nursing scope of practice rules. Recommends updates to facility policy as needed to comply with changes in VDSS regulations and VA Board of Nursing scope of practice rules. 
  • Trains team members in standard precautions, hand hygiene, and infection risk reduction practices and conducts regular competency validation for medication aides and licensed team members.
  • Investigates, documents, and report infections or outbreaks per state and facility policy.
  • Coordinates outbreak response, reporting and documentation in compliance with VDSS and local health department requirements.
  • Partners with Infection Preventionist to ensure compliance with employee health requirements.
  • Supervises Registered Medication Aides, Licensed Practice Nurses, and Registered Nurses providing health and wellness services to residents at The View Alexandria. 
  • Ensures adequate numbers of team members who meet qualification and competency requirements for assigned duties. Coordinates with HR and Talent Acquisition to identify, interview and hire appropriate candidates for employment as needed.
  • Oversees required clinical training for direct care staff, including orientation, ongoing education, and annual training hours.
  • Encourages positive team member behavior and performance, provides constructive feedback including timely completion of performance appraisals, and responds to team member concerns to foster an empowered workforce.
  • Identifies performance and behavior concerns, holds team members accountable utilizing disciplinary procedures, and documents actions and follow-up.
  • Participates in VDSS inspections, complaint investigations, and corrective action planning.
  • Operates department within established budgetary parameters; assists with budget preparation; continuously monitors financial performance; reports variances of actual to budgeted financial performance to administrator on a regular basis.
  • Delegates responsibilities to team members adequately to ensure effective and appropriate accomplishments of tasks as needed. 
  • Ability to work flexible hours as required to meet business needs, including after-hours on-call and weekend/holiday “Manager on Duty” shifts. 

Job Requirements

  1. Must have an active, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  2. Knowledge of Virginia Assisted Living Facility regulations [22VAC40-73] required. Private-Pay Uniform Assessment Instrument (UAI) and Individualized Service Plan (ISP) certified preferred.
  3. Minimum of 2 years nursing experience in assisted living, geriatrics or residential care required. 
  4. Minimum of 2 years in a leadership/supervisory role required, including demonstrated ability to supervise and train staff providing care in a 24-hour congregate living environment. 
  5. Prior experience overseeing medication management programs, infection control programs and regulatory surveys strongly preferred. 
  6. Proficient using computers including Microsoft Office applications, PointClick Care, and internet-based platforms. 
  7. Must be able to read, write and communicate effectively in English and possess ability to deal tactfully with residents, family members and team members.
