Position Summary:

For those interested in environmental education, Audubon Vermont provides college students and recent graduates with a paid internship. At Audubon Vermont we believe Nature can be one of the best teachers and find the balance between being a "teacher out front" and a "guide on the side". We are looking for an intern who is interested in learning and practicing their skills as an educator in a supportive environment at our Afterschool and Field Trip programs.

  • Length of Internship: Fall Semester 2026, 305 hours

  • Location: This position is classified as on-site based at Audubon VT and Green Mountain Audubon Center in Huntington VT

  • Hours: 20 hours/week

Compensation:

$19.57 / hour

Additional Job Description

Intern Responsibilities and Learning Objectives:

During the internship, you will work with the education staff to:

  • Deliver after-school programing in-line with Audubon Vermont operations for young children outdoors every day.

  • Create, maintain, and update curriculum, instructional materials, and teaching spaces.

  • Lead programs for children from diverse backgrounds.

  • Partner with Audubon staff to ensure that equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging principles are incorporated and followed in all aspects of our work.

Internship Benefits:

Interns will gain experience and knowledge in the following:

  • Interact with the professional scientists, educators, and advocates at Audubon, as well as other interns and the general public in Vermont.

  • Gain practical experience teaching elementary students while working directly with GMAC's team of professional Teacher/Naturalists.

  • Experience designing lesson plans.

  • Mentorship from our team of passionate educations.

  • Students may earn academic credit for their time, in addition to pay, upon discussion with your school advisor and the hiring manager.

Intern Schedule:

  • Our ideal candidate is available Monday-Thursday afternoons:

  • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday from 2-5:30;

  • Wednesday 12-5:30 (1 Wednesday each month the program runs 12:30-3:30);

  • and Fridays 8-12 (flexible, depending on field trip schedule).

Fall semester 2026

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Commitment to Audubon's organizational values of care, collaboration, change, integrity, impact, and

  • innovation.

  • Course work that focuses on environmental education, biology, natural history, conservation, or a major in education with an interest in alternative forms of education.

  • Access to reliable transportation is preferred due to limited public transit options.

  • Experience and ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.

  • Desire to teach nature-based programming in an outdoor setting, in all weather.

  • Interest in connecting people to nature and developing your own natural history, conservation, and nature mentoring skills.

  • Proven interest in working with children, demonstrated through coursework, volunteering, babysitting, or formal work experience.

  • Passion for nature and the outdoors.

  • Previous related experience in outdoor education a plus.

  • Self-motivated and organized person able to stay on task without direct supervision and to be able to work on multiple projects or education programs.
