The Instructional Design Associate and Trainer plays a key role in elevating Public Safety learning by creating engaging, accessible, and learner-focused training experiences that support students, faculty, and staff.
Job Description
The Public Safety Division has a critical role in supporting the well-being of our community. Comprised of the Police Department, Environmental Health & Safety, the Office of Emergency Management, Hokie Passport, and the Virginia Tech Rescue Squad, we are committed to fostering a safe and supportive environment for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors that maximizes everyone's opportunity for success. The Instructional Design Associate and Trainer is a versatile and creative professional responsible for the development and delivery of high-quality instructional and outreach materials for Public Safety. Reporting to the Public Safety Operations team, the Instructional Design Associate and Trainer is a contributing member of the training team, dedicated to development and delivery of learner-centric instructional content. Training development includes different learning modalities, instructional design principles, synchronous and asynchronous media development, graphics, simulations, and the use of different content management platforms.
The Instructional Design Associate and Trainer has a broad knowledge of instructional design learning management systems and best practices for content development and learner engagement. The incumbent develops, revises asynchronous e-learning components consistent with the various safety and compliance programs within Public Safety, consistently applying VT brand guidelines and best practices for accessibility. The Instructional Design Associate and Trainer may deliver in-person and hybrid training programs for select program areas. The incumbent works with stakeholders collaboratively to ideate and develop content, identify gaps in knowledge and uses that information to develop new training or revise existing training as needed. As part of the operations team, the Instructional Design Associate and Trainer researches and integrates new technologies, media formats, and methodologies into public safety training.
As part of the training team, the Instructional Design Associate and Trainer works with program managers, departmental representatives, faculty, and graduate assistants to evaluate training gaps within the student curriculum and develop/revise training to close identified gaps. The incumbent also identifies opportunities to create and implement training tracks for faculty, staff, and students, and engages with student groups and organizations on public safety issues.
The incumbent also performs other duties as requested; takes initiative to support a healthy work environment; strives to fulfill the terms in the Standards of Business Conduct; exemplifies the Virginia Tech Principles of Community; and supports the university's motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).
Required Qualifications
Education
• Bachelor's degree in a related field (IT, human resources, education; training and development) or comparable training and experience.
Experience
• Experience in instructional design and development of training content for diverse audiences and learning styles.
• Experience in the management of learning management systems, including the use of reports and analytics to measure training value.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Technical proficiency in e-learning tools (e.g., Rise, Storyline, Articulate 360, Captivate) and production of SCORM-compliant, accessible content.
• Ability to lead brainstorming sessions with stakeholders and develop a project plan and timeline for delivery.
• Ability to perform as a team member, collaborating with subject matter experts and other stakeholders in a team environment.
• Demonstrated creativity, critical thinking, and project / time management skills.
Preferred Qualifications
• Master's degree and/or professional certification in a related area.
• Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud products, including Adobe Express, Photoshop, InDesign)
• Experience with data visualization tools and creation of graphics to convey critical concepts.
• Experience with Qualtrics, PowerBI or similar survey and data visualization tools.
• Willingness to travel on several overnight trips each year to assist with project management and training in other Virginia Tech locations.
