What is information technology?

Information Technology (IT) refers to the use of computers, networks, storage, and other physical devices, infrastructure, and processes to create, process, store, secure, and exchange all forms of electronic data. IT is commonly used in the context of business operations, where it supports a wide range of functions including software development, technical support, network administration, and cybersecurity. IT professionals help organizations manage and utilize technology to solve problems, improve efficiency, and drive innovation. The field is broad and constantly evolving, offering various career paths in both technical and managerial roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in information technology?

To thrive in Information Technology, you need a solid understanding of computer systems, networking, programming, and cybersecurity, often supported by a relevant degree or certifications such as CompTIA, Cisco, or Microsoft. Familiarity with operating systems, cloud platforms, and IT management tools is typically essential in the field. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are valuable soft skills that help IT professionals excel. These skills and qualifications are important for ensuring reliable technology operations, effective troubleshooting, and successful collaboration with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

What are some common challenges faced by information technology professionals in a rapidly changing tech environment?

Information Technology professionals often encounter challenges such as keeping up with fast-evolving technologies, managing cybersecurity threats, and adapting legacy systems to modern requirements. Staying current often requires ongoing professional development, certifications, and a proactive approach to learning. Additionally, IT professionals must communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders to ensure smooth project delivery and system integration.

  • Communicate clearly and collaborate with non-technical stakeholders; translate technical complexity into plain-language recommendations and business cases
  • May assume additional duties as necessary
Food Safety Responsibilities
  • Ensure IT systems that support food safety and quality operations - including RedZone (MES / OEE), NetSuite (ERP / traceability), and FSQA-related data integrations - are reliable, secure, properly maintained, and available to support uninterrupted production and regulatory compliance
  • Partner with the FSQA team to support audit readiness - ensuring technology systems, access logs, data integrity controls, and electronic records meet SQF, HACCP, and FDA requirements; assist in timely response to audit requests involving IT-managed data or systems
  • Protect the integrity of food safety and quality data - establish and enforce access controls, change management procedures, and data governance practices that prevent unauthorized modification of records related to production, lot traceability, and quality holds
  • Ensure OT / IT network security at the Elk River facility safeguards production systems and plant-floor connectivity; work with Operations and FSQA to ensure that cybersecurity measures do not create gaps in food safety monitoring or traceability
  • Support business continuity and disaster recovery planning with specific consideration for food safety-critical systems; ensure that recovery time objectives (RTOs) for production and FSQA systems reflect the operational risk of downtime in a food manufacturing environment
  • Actively model and promote food safety culture - understand and uphold JonnyPops' food safety standards when planning and executing technology projects, vendor integrations, and system changes that touch production or quality operations
Minimum Qualifications
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field; equivalent experience considered
