What is an informatics nurse?

An informatics nurse is a medical professional who uses computers and patient data to optimize outcomes and workflow in a medical environment. These specialized nursing professionals work with computer provider order entry (CPOE) and electronic medical records (EMRs) to collect data, interpret results, and identify relationships. EMRs include test results, notes from nurses, and information on medications given to patients. As an informatics nurse, you also help develop evidence-based policies and procedures for organizations, and may serve as an educator, researcher, and even software engineer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an informatics nurse, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Informatics Nurse, you need a solid background in nursing practice combined with expertise in health informatics, generally supported by a nursing degree and often a certification like the ANCC Informatics Nursing Certification. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, clinical decision support tools, and data analytics platforms is crucial. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help bridge the gap between clinical staff and IT professionals. These skills ensure the successful integration of technology into healthcare settings, improving patient care quality and workflow efficiency.

How does an informatics nurse typically collaborate with IT and clinical staff to implement new healthcare technologies?

Informatics Nurses play a crucial liaison role by bridging the gap between clinical teams and IT specialists. They communicate clinical needs and workflows to IT professionals, help translate technical jargon, and ensure that new healthcare technologies are user-friendly and improve patient care. Collaboration often involves participating in interdisciplinary project meetings, conducting workflow analyses, and providing training to clinical staff on new systems or updates. This teamwork helps ensure successful technology adoption and ongoing optimization within the healthcare setting.

Job description

Our Community Roots
The Reno-Sparks Indian Colony represents descendants of three Great Basin Indigenous peoples: the Numu (Northern Paiute), Newe (Western Shoshone), and Washeshu (Washoe). These communities lived in harmony with the land for generations before European contact, following seasonal cycles and forming small, efficient social groups for survival.
Each group's name means "The People" in their own language, reflecting their deep cultural identity and connection to the Earth. They maintained strong traditions, respected neighboring tribes, and engaged in trade throughout the region.
Today, the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony continues to honor these traditions while supporting the well-being, culture, and future of its tribal community.
What You'll Lead
As Health Informatics Manager, you will guide how health information systems and data are used to strengthen care quality, compliance, and operational performance. You'll set the informatics roadmap and connect clinical, administrative, and technical partners so solutions support organizational priorities.
Key responsibilities include EHR optimization and interoperability; workflow and clinical decision support improvements; upgrades, integrations, and downtime readiness; data governance, reporting, dashboards, and analytics; and accurate submission of required quality and regulatory reports. You will also oversee HIPAA/HITECH-aligned practices, support audits and accreditation activities, lead training and change management, and manage vendors and informatics projects.
Required qualifications:
- 8 years' experience in health informatics/clinical systems/healthcare
- Demonstrated EHR and healthcare data reporting experience
- Strong knowledge of clinical workflows, documentation, and regulatory requirements
- Degree in a related field (associate's/bachelor's preferred)
- Relevant certification (e.g., RHIA/RHIT/PMP/Clinical Informatics)
- Experience in Tribal healthcare, IHS, FQHC, or rural health; accreditation/QI support
Apply to help advance patient-centered, culturally sensitive informatics.
A Typical Workday
You start onsite in Reno by checking overnight system status and reviewing priority requests from clinical and administrative teams. Mid-morning is often spent aligning on upcoming changes-confirming timelines, validating report outputs, and making sure stakeholders understand what's changing and when. After lunch, you may join a short huddle in the clinic to observe how tools are working in real time, then return to your office to finalize documentation, coordinate with vendors, and prepare materials for end-user communications. Late afternoon is reserved for reviewing performance metrics and ensuring key submissions are on track, with occasional planning for meetings, trainings, or conferences. The schedule is regular full-time, Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., with periodic travel as needed.
