What is an independent contractor MDS?

Independent Contractor MDS (Minimum Data Set) professionals are specialists who are hired on a contract basis, rather than as full-time employees, to manage and oversee the MDS assessment process in healthcare facilities, particularly in long-term care or nursing homes. Their main responsibility is to ensure accurate and timely completion of MDS assessments, which are essential for patient care planning and facility reimbursement. These contractors often work with multiple facilities, providing expertise and support as needed, and help maintain compliance with federal and state regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an independent contractor MDS?

To excel as an Independent Contractor MDS (Minimum Data Set), you need expertise in clinical assessment, thorough knowledge of MDS 3.0 guidelines, and a valid nursing license (typically RN or LPN/LVN). Familiarity with MDS software systems, electronic health records (EHRs), and experience with CMS regulations are crucial. Attention to detail, time management, and strong communication skills set top performers apart in this role. These competencies ensure accurate data submission, regulatory compliance, and optimal reimbursement for long-term care facilities.

What are some common challenges independent contractor MDS professionals face when working with multiple healthcare facilities?

Independent Contractor MDS professionals often navigate the complexities of adapting to different facility protocols, electronic health record (EHR) systems, and documentation standards. Balancing the unique expectations and communication styles of various interdisciplinary teams can be challenging, especially when managing multiple assignments simultaneously. Staying current with regulatory changes and ensuring compliance across diverse settings also requires strong organizational and time management skills. Building effective relationships quickly and maintaining consistent quality in assessments are crucial for long-term success in this role.

At Coral, a rapidly growing company, you'll have the chance to shape the future of women's healthcare and innovate with us. We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Nurse Practitioner (NP) in Women's health to support our care team (registered nurses and health coach) in prescribing tailored hormone replacement therapy (HRT) when needed by our members. This custom treatment will be built and implemented in collaboration with our medical director. The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills and be a great team player. What You'll Do

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct virtual consultations to assess and manage perimenopause / menopause symptoms.
  • Develop and implement personalized care plans, including HRT when appropriate, based on patient needs and evidence-based guidelines.
  • Educate patients about perimenopause, treatment options, lifestyle modifications, and preventive care.
  • Collaborate closely with RNs and MDs on lab tests, exams, and prescribed medications to ensure comprehensive care.
  • Maintain accurate and timely electronic medical records (EMR) in compliance with PIPEDA regulations.
  • Stay updated on the latest research and guidelines related to perimenopause and HRT.
  • Provide a compassionate and supportive environment for patients, fostering trust and open communication.
  • Maintain the highest standards of care.
What We're Looking For

Qualification: BC license required, with additional provinces licenses being a bonus.

Clinical Expertise: You are a NP (Nurse Practitioner) with specialized experience in women's health, hormonal therapy, and holistic care, with a focus on supporting women through peri- to post-menopause. Bonus if you also have basic knowledge of nutrition, exercise, and psychology.

Attention to Detail: You are thorough in client assessments, symptom tracking, and documentation, ensuring every aspect of care is recorded in the EMR.

Strong Communicator: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to connect with patients in a virtual setting.

Collaborative Leader: You are comfortable working closely with Nurses, Doctors, and coaches, providing medical oversight and direction. Ability to escalate situations outside of your expertise to the MDs.

Problem Solver: You can make critical decisions when symptoms escalate or change, ensuring the client's health is always prioritized.

Client-Centered: You are dedicated to improving client outcomes, especially with HRT management, symptom relief, holistic approaches and long-term health improvements.

Adaptability: You can manage the fast-paced nature of virtual healthcare while maintaining high standards of care. You can adapt to a start-up growing and evolving company.

Comfort with Remote Work: You are comfortable working in a virtual setting and using online medical consultation platforms to connect with clients and manage care. Familiarity with telehealth platforms and electronic medical record systems.
