What are some common challenges faced by independent contractor chefs, and how can they be managed?

Independent contractor chefs often face challenges such as irregular work schedules, fluctuating client demands, and managing all aspects of their business, including marketing, invoicing, and menu planning. To manage these challenges, it’s important to develop strong organizational skills, maintain clear communication with clients, and set boundaries regarding availability. Building a reliable network of suppliers and using scheduling or accounting software can also help streamline operations and ensure a professional experience for both the chef and their clients.

What is an Independent Contractor Chef?

An Independent Contractor Chef is a culinary professional who operates their own business and provides cooking services on a contract basis rather than being employed by a single restaurant or entity. They may be hired to prepare meals for private events, provide personal chef services, or consult for restaurants and catering companies. Independent contractor chefs have the flexibility to set their own schedules, choose their clients, and manage their own business operations, including taxes and marketing. This role requires both culinary expertise and the ability to manage a small business.

What is the difference between Independent Contractor Chef vs Personal Chef?

AspectIndependent Contractor ChefPersonal Chef
CredentialsCulinary certifications, experienceCulinary certifications, experience
Work EnvironmentMultiple clients, various locationsPrivate homes, individual clients
Employer/Industry UsageFreelance, catering, event industryPrivate households, lifestyle services
Work StyleSelf-employed, flexible scheduleSelf-employed, personalized service

Both roles require culinary skills and certifications, but an Independent Contractor Chef typically works with multiple clients across various settings, offering catering and event services. In contrast, a Personal Chef provides tailored meal preparation directly in clients' homes, focusing on personalized service. Understanding these differences helps clarify career paths and client expectations in the culinary industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Independent Contractor Chef, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Independent Contractor Chef, you need strong culinary skills, food safety knowledge, and experience in menu planning, often supported by a culinary degree or relevant certifications. Familiarity with kitchen equipment, point-of-sale systems, and food safety certifications such as ServSafe are typically required. Excellent time management, adaptability, and client communication skills help chefs stand out in personalized and often variable work environments. These skills ensure high-quality food preparation, customer satisfaction, and the ability to manage diverse cooking assignments independently.

Job description

About CookUnity:

Food has lost its soul to modern convenience. And with it, it has lost the power to nourish, inspire, and connect us. So in 2018, CookUnity was founded as the first-of-its-kind platform that connects the world with the source of truly great food: chefs. Today, CookUnity delivers 50 million meals a year from the industry's best chefs to homes all over the country. Fresh. Ready-to-eat. And crafted with the passion that nourishes body and soul.

Unwilling to stop there, CookUnity is expanding beyond delivery to become an ever-innovating marketplace focused on our singular mission: empower Chefs to nourish the world.

If that mission has you hungry in more ways than one, you've found the right job posting.

About the Team:

The B2B team operates like a startup within CookUnity — an entrepreneurial, fast-paced, and innovative team that is charting a bold new path by bringing these same exceptional culinary experiences to businesses, organizations, and their employees. We sell smart fridge deployments, employee meal programs, and workplace food solutions to some of the most recognizable companies in the country. We're scaling fast and need a leader who can run with us.

The Role

We're looking for a senior-level contract recruiter to partner with our Talent Acquisition team and hiring managers on high-impact B2B GTM searches, supporting the growth of CookUnity Business.

This role will focus on hiring across Sales, Partnerships, Customer Success, and B2B Marketing, while partnering with our internal Engineering recruitment team in helping us scale both our CookUnity smart fridge offering and Medically Tailored Meals (MTM) business across the U.S. and Canada.

You'll play a key role in building pipelines, engaging top-tier talent, and closing exceptional candidates who thrive in fast-paced, high-growth environments. This requires a strong understanding of B2B talent markets and the ability to translate a complex, mission-driven product into a compelling candidate story.

You'll collaborate closely with our in-house recruiting team and business leaders to help shape hiring strategy and raise the bar for talent across CookUnity Business.

What You'll Do
  • Partner with hiring managers and the Talent team to own full-cycle recruiting or key portions of searches across B2B functions
  • Assist in building out scorecards, working with interview stakeholders to draft JD's, have knowledge on the market and insights
  • Build and manage pipelines for Sales (AE, Enterprise, SDR), Partnerships, Customer Success, and B2B Marketing roles, including Director and above roles.
  • Act as a strategic advisor to stakeholders—leading intake sessions, calibrating profiles, and sharing market insights on talent availability and compensation.
  • Drive proactive sourcing and outbound engagement, leveraging tools like LinkedIn Recruiter, Greenhouse, GEM, and AI sourcing platforms.
  • Develop and communicate a compelling narrative around CookUnity Business, including CU Smart Fridges and MTM, to attract mission-driven candidates.
  • Deliver a high-quality candidate experience, with clear communication and thoughtful engagement throughout the process.
  • Facilitate structured interview processes and debriefs, ensuring alignment with CookUnity's values and hiring standards.
  • Partner on talent branding efforts to strengthen CookUnity's presence in B2B and GTM talent communities.
  • Use data to track pipeline health, optimize funnel conversion, and improve hiring velocity.
About You
  • 5+ years of full-cycle recruiting experience, with a strong focus on B2B GTM roles (Sales, Partnerships, Customer Success, B2B Marketing).
  • Proven success hiring for high-growth, product-led or marketplace businesses.
  • Deep understanding of B2B sales and revenue org structures, including enterprise and mid-market motions.
  • Experience sourcing and closing senior and leadership-level GTM talent.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills - you can influence, challenge, and guide hiring decisions.
  • Hands-on expertise with sourcing tools and ATS platforms (Greenhouse preferred).
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to tell compelling, nuanced company stories.
  • Highly organized, proactive, and comfortable operating independently in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment.
Nice to Have
  • Experience recruiting in food tech, health tech, or B2B SaaS environments.
  • Familiarity with North American and LATAM talent markets.
  • Exposure to healthcare-related hiring (especially MTM or value-based care models).
  • Conversational Spanish is a plus.
