What does an immigration paralegal do?

An Immigration Paralegal assists attorneys in preparing and filing legal documents related to immigration cases, such as visa applications, green card petitions, and citizenship requests. They help gather and organize client information, conduct legal research, and ensure all paperwork complies with current immigration laws and regulations. Immigration paralegals also communicate with clients, government agencies, and courts to track case statuses and deadlines. Their work is essential in supporting attorneys and helping clients navigate the often complex immigration process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an immigration paralegal, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Immigration Paralegal, you need a strong understanding of immigration law, attention to detail, and experience preparing legal documents, typically supported by a paralegal certificate or relevant degree. Familiarity with case management software, e-filing systems, and government immigration portals (such as USCIS or Department of State online systems) is essential. Strong organizational skills, cultural sensitivity, and clear communication are crucial soft skills for managing client cases and collaborating with attorneys. These competencies ensure accurate case preparation, timely submissions, and effective client support in a complex and evolving legal environment.

What are some common challenges faced by immigration paralegals in managing case workloads?

Immigration Paralegals often handle a high volume of cases with strict and varying deadlines, which can be challenging to manage efficiently. They must stay organized, prioritize tasks, and keep up with frequent changes in immigration laws and procedures. Effective communication with clients, attorneys, and government agencies is crucial to ensure accuracy and timely submission of documents. Additionally, paralegals may encounter emotionally charged situations, requiring sensitivity and professionalism. Developing strong organizational and interpersonal skills is key to succeeding in this role.

Job description

Immigration Law Paralegal

Dentons Durham Jones Pinegar P.C. seeks a full-time paralegal to join and work in our fast-paced and growing immigration law practice headed by Tim Wheelwright, one of the most experienced and well-respected immigration attorneys in Utah and the Intermountain Region.  The successful candidate would work in the firm’s Ogden, Salt Lake City, or Lehi, Utah office.

  • The ideal candidate would already have extensive experience working as a paralegal or related position in immigration law, preferably with an emphasis in employment-based projects, but we are most interested in finding someone who possesses the professional skills listed below and the personal attributes, ambition, desire, and interest to learn immigration law and work with a clientele with a diversity of languages and cultures from all over the world.
  • We are looking for someone who has excellent writing, reasoning, and verbal skills, strong organizational, research and time management skills, and the ability to work collaboratively and efficiently in a team environment on a high volume of time-sensitive and high-stakes projects.
  • The ideal candidate would also have a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in Spanish and English, however, a candidate who speaks another foreign language or who even lacks such foreign language ability altogether, but possesses the qualities referenced in this ad, would still be considered strongly for this position.
  • A bachelor’s degree and/or accredited paralegal certificate is required for the Paralegal position.  If a candidate does not possess this qualification, but does have the experience and skills we seek, there is the option to hire that candidate as a Case Specialist.

The ideal candidate enjoys taking on new and varied responsibilities, works well independently and with others, and is driven to work hard. Exceptional organizational and time management skills are a necessity, as are careful attention to detail, the desire and ability to generate top-quality work product, and the ability to interact with attorneys and support staff in a professional manner.

Dentons Durham Jones Pinegar PC offers a competitive salary and benefits package including medical, health savings account, flexible spending account, dental, vision, 401k, Life Insurance, long-term disability, paid time off, paid holidays, paid parking or transit passes.
