What is the difference between Hydraulic Modeler vs Civil Engineer?

AspectHydraulic ModelerCivil Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Civil, Environmental, or Hydraulic Engineering; certifications in hydraulic modeling softwareBachelor's in Civil, Structural, or Environmental Engineering; PE license often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesign firms, consulting agencies, government agencies focused on water resourcesConstruction sites, design firms, infrastructure projects
Industry UsageSpecialized in water flow, flood risk, and hydraulic systemsBroad engineering projects including transportation, structures, water resources

Hydraulic Modelers focus specifically on modeling water systems and hydraulic simulations, while Civil Engineers have a broader scope including infrastructure design and construction. Both roles often collaborate but differ in specialization and project focus.

What are some typical challenges faced by hydraulic modelers when working on large-scale infrastructure projects?

Hydraulic modelers working on large-scale infrastructure projects often encounter challenges such as integrating complex data from multiple sources, ensuring model accuracy with limited field data, and adapting models to reflect real-world changes over time. Collaboration with engineers, planners, and environmental scientists is essential to address these issues and ensure models meet regulatory and client requirements. Staying current with modeling software and industry standards also helps overcome these challenges and deliver reliable results.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Hydraulic Modeler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Hydraulic Modeler, you need a solid background in civil or environmental engineering, hydrology, and fluid mechanics, often supported by a relevant degree. Proficiency in modeling software such as HEC-RAS, SWMM, InfoWorks, or MIKE, as well as GIS applications, is typically required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help in interpreting data and conveying complex findings to stakeholders. These skills are crucial for producing accurate models that inform infrastructure planning, flood risk assessment, and water resource management.

What is a Hydraulic Modeler?

A Hydraulic Modeler is a professional who uses mathematical models and computer simulations to analyze and predict the behavior of water flows in natural and engineered systems, such as rivers, stormwater networks, and water treatment facilities. They play a crucial role in designing infrastructure, assessing flood risks, and optimizing water resource management. Hydraulic Modelers often work with specialized software to create accurate models that help inform engineering decisions and environmental planning.

Job description

Cannon & Cannon, Inc. (An Ardurra Company) is seeking an experienced Hydraulic Modeler our Knoxville, TN, Nashville, TN and Bowling Green, KY office's.

Primary Function

The candidate will provide engineering support for hydraulic modeling of water and wastewater systems using industry-standard modeling software. Responsibilities include building, calibrating, and applying hydraulic models to evaluate existing system capacity, simulate operational conditions, and assess proposed system improvements.

This role involves translating system data, operational controls, and infrastructure characteristics into accurate and defensible modeling outputs that support planning and design decisions. The position also provides technical leadership in evaluating system performance, identifying capacity constraints, and developing long-term improvement strategies, while ensuring all modeling practices align with industry standards and client objectives.

Primary Duties

  • Identify, collect, process, and input hydraulic and infrastructure data required for model development.
  • Utilize tools such as AutoCAD, ArcGIS Pro, Microsoft Excel, SCADA systems, and other data management platforms to support model development and analysis.
  • Execute calibrations of water and/or wastewater models meeting AWWA M32 calibration standards.
  • Coordinate with engineering staff to define and obtain additional field data required for calibration, including unidirectional flushing/hydrant testing and extended pressure monitoring.
  • Troubleshoot model convergence and simulation issues, coordinating with internal and external IT resources as needed.
  • Export and present model results in the form of graphs, tables, GIS shapefiles, and mapping exhibits.
  • Compile technical memoranda and reports documenting model development, calibration, system evaluation, and recommended improvements.
  • Utilize fundamental hydraulic principles independent of modeling software to validate model inputs and results.
  • Lead, assist, or compile necessary documents for kickoff, progress, and close out meetings.

Education Requirements

  • BS Civil/Environmental/Mechanical Engineering/Computer Engineering
  • 5-7 years Engineering experience
  • EIT designation is desired

Technical Experience

  • Strong background in hydraulic modeling of water and/or wastewater systems
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, GIS platforms (e.g., ArcGIS Pro), Microsoft Excel, and data analysis/statistics
  • Experience supporting public-sector utility projects (water, wastewater, and/or reuse systems).
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic behavior and modeling of pumping stations, lift stations, and system controls
  • Understanding of conveyance infrastructure including pipelines, control valves, pressure-reducing stations, and metering facilities, and their impact on system hydraulics.
  • Ability to evaluate system performance metrics including pressure, headloss, flow distribution, and operational reliability within complex systems.
  • Experience incorporating facility-specific operational characteristics into models to support planning, design, and operational decision-making.

Preferred Qualifications And Experience

  • Experience in Water and Sewer Utility Operation, Maintenance, or Construction
  • Experience authoring, or contributing to engineering technical memoranda and reports utilizing modeling
  • Proficient in hydraulic modeling softwares including InfoWater Pro, InfoWorks ICM, WaterGEMs, SewerGEMs, or Aquanuity.
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Water Resources Engineering, with minimal years of experience
  • Licensed Professional Engineer
