To thrive as a Human Service Intern, you typically need foundational knowledge in social work or human services, strong interpersonal skills, and current academic enrollment in a related field. Familiarity with case management software, documentation protocols, and basic office tools is often required. Compassion, active listening, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for building rapport with clients and supporting diverse needs. These skills and qualifications are vital for effectively assisting clients, contributing to team goals, and gaining practical experience in human services settings.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during a Human Service Internship?

During a Human Service Internship, you can expect to engage in a variety of hands-on projects such as assisting with client intakes, supporting case management, and participating in community outreach programs. This role provides valuable exposure to real-world challenges in the human services field and helps interns develop essential communication and problem-solving skills while making meaningful contributions to the community. Regular supervision and feedback are also typical, helping you grow professionally throughout your internship.

Interns typically work with organizations that provide support, advocacy, and resources to people in need, such as social service agencies, community organizations, or nonprofits. These internships help participants apply classroom knowledge, develop professional competencies, and learn more about potential career paths in the human services field. Job description

Compassus Hospice offers undergraduate human service and family service internship opportunities throughout Bergen, Passaic, Morris, Essex and Sussex counties. Interns are trained to provide physical, psychosocial, and spiritual support to the hospice patient and family. Interns visit with our patients to provide socialization, companionship, respite care, and helping caregivers with errands. As an integral member of the hospice interdisciplinary team, the intern’s interventions relieve patients’ symptoms of depression and anxiety by offering interactive music, reading to patients, leisure activities and expressive art and writing activities. In addition to patient care, intern’s responsibilities often include volunteer recruitment, program planning and community outreach activities. Our interns work in the office as well as in the field to provide support to both the staff and our patients.

To us, hospice care is not about the end of life, it is about inspiring life - making each moment meaningful.
