Organization: SBCS (Formerly known as South Bay Community Services)  

Location: In-person, Chula Vista, CA 91910 

Length: At least 6 months commitment 

Schedule: Monday - Friday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Schedule is flexible) 

Hours: Minimum of 4 hours per week 

Compensation: Unpaid 

Reports to: Human Resources Senior Specialist

Organizational Overview: 

SBCS (formerly South Bay Community Services) transforms communities to support the well-being and prosperity of children, youth, and families. For more than 50 years, we've worked throughout San Diego to provide safe shelter, transitional housing, intervention prevention programs, mental health support, and many other services that meet the ever-changing needs of our communities. 


Program & Volunteer Overview: 

Three to five volunteers are needed, who are ready to learn about various components of Human Resources and are of support to our Human Resources Department. This may include supporting onboarding processes for a variety of SBCS programs, reaching out to applicants and facilitating the completion of clearances, and assisting the HR team with a variety of administrative tasks such as digitizing documents and organizing confidential files. 

This volunteer opportunity will offer firsthand experience in HR operations and work alongside the HR team.    


Volunteers should demonstrate the ability to: 

  • Assist with general recordkeeping of personnel files.  
  • Assist with data entry for internal databases.  
  • Assist with HR-related reports as needed, including reviewing and comparing reports to ensure accuracy. 
  • Assist with HR Communications and Employee Engagement activities such as creating flyers using Canva, managing RSVP forms, and generating QR codes etc. 
  • Assist with general administrative HR duties as needed.  
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism. Discreetly handle sensitive and/or private information. 

Requirements: 

  • Must be over 18 years of age 
  • Must have a Valid ID 
  • Must pass a background check and TB testing 
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Human Resources or Business Administration preferred 
  • Strong organizational skills and detailed oriented 
  • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. 
  • Strong ethics and reliability. 
  • Ability to work independently: apply good judgment in decision making. 
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills 
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Applications including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.  
  • Must be enrolled in a work experience course for academic credit.
