Job description

About Knexus
At Knexus, we believe that the best work happens when smart, passionate people are given the autonomy to innovate and the support to succeed. We operate in the dynamic world of federal contracting, offering the agility, speed, and tight-knit culture of a mid-sized business alongside the impactful reach of a premier government partner.
If you are looking for a remote role where your expertise will directly shape company strategy, your critical thinking will be celebrated, and your work-life balance will be respected, Knexus is the place for you.
Role Overview
We are seeking an autonomous, compliance-minded, and tech-savvy HR Manager to oversee and elevate our human resources operations. In this non-supervisory role, you will report directly to the VP of Finance and Administration and serve as the foundational pillar for our fully distributed team.
The ideal candidate has 5 to 8 years of progressive HR experience, with a proven track record of managing HR operations within a strictly remote corporate environment. You will be our go-to expert on navigating the complexities of a multi-state workforce-someone who thrives on researching and conquering unfamiliar state regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Multi-State Compliance & Legal Oversight
  • Navigate Complex Regulations: Oversee HR compliance across multiple U.S. states. Proactively research, interpret, and implement policies for new states as our footprint expands.
  • Rigorous Quality Control: Review and maintain company handbooks, employment agreements, and state-specific compliance mandates.
  • Risk Management: Ensure the business remains fully aligned with evolving federal, state, and local labor laws.

Employee Lifecycle & Performance
  • Onboarding & Offboarding: Own the end-to-end lifecycle processes. Ensure new hires feel welcomed and integrated into our remote culture from day one, and manage offboarding with empathy, compliance, and administrative precision.
  • Performance Evaluation Cycle: Lead, design, and execute our annual/mid-year performance evaluation cycles, ensuring managers and employees are aligned on growth and accountability.

Communication & Culture
  • Friendly but Firm Approach: Act as a trusted, accessible partner for employees while confidently upholding company policies, compliance boundaries, and business objectives.

Process Automation & Tech Optimization
  • Smart Tool Utilization: Sensibly evaluate and integrate modern tools (including AI and HRIS automations) to streamline administrative workflows, generate basic templates, and eliminate manual redundancy.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Experience: 5-8 years of dedicated HR experience, with a mandatory requirement of at least 2-3 years supporting a fully remote organization.
  • Multi-State Expertise: Proven ability to independently dive into, figure out, and implement labor laws in states where the company has no prior footprint.
  • Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; ability to balance a warm, approachable demeanor with firm boundary-setting.
  • Education & Certifications: Holding one of the following certifications/degrees is highly desirable, but not required:
    • SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP (SHRM Certified Professional / Senior Certified Professional)
    • PHR or SPHR (Professional / Senior Professional in Human Resources via HRCI)
    • Bachelor's Degree in HR, Business Administration, or a related field.
