What is a human resources assistant contract?

Human Resources Assistant Contract positions are temporary roles within the HR department of an organization. People in these roles support various HR functions such as recruiting, onboarding, maintaining employee records, and assisting with payroll or benefits administration. Contract HR Assistants are typically hired for a specific period, such as to cover for staff on leave or to help during busy times, and may work full-time or part-time. These roles require strong organizational and communication skills, as well as familiarity with HR processes and software.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a human resources assistant contract?

To thrive as a Human Resources Assistant (Contract), you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a foundational understanding of HR principles, often supported by a relevant degree or HR certification. Familiarity with HR information systems (HRIS), applicant tracking systems (ATS), and office software like Microsoft Office is typically required. Excellent communication, discretion, and the ability to multitask are crucial soft skills that set standout candidates apart. These skills ensure efficient HR operations, maintain confidentiality, and support a positive employee experience in a fast-paced environment.

What are some typical challenges a human resources assistant contract faces when working on a contract basis?

As a contract Human Resources Assistant, you may encounter challenges such as quickly adapting to new company policies, systems, and team dynamics, since contract roles often require immediate productivity. Location: Denver, CO
Job Type: Part-time Contract-to-Permanent
Pay: $25.00-$30.00 per hour
Expected Hours: 20-24 hours per week
Are you an organized Human Resources professional who enjoys keeping things running smoothly behind the scenes?
Do you have hands-on experience with onboarding, employee records, recruiting coordination, and HR administration-and want a flexible schedule without stepping away from your HR career?
We'd love to hear from you!
About the Opportunity
A well-established senior living community in the Denver area is looking for an experienced and detail-oriented Human Resources Assistant to provide day-to-day support to its Human Resources department.
This is a part-time, contract-to-permanent opportunity with a long-term schedule of approximately 20-24 hours per week.
You'll work closely with the Human Resources Director while supporting employees and department leaders throughout the community. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys the administrative side of HR but also likes interacting with employees and being part of a busy workplace.
What You'll Do
As the Human Resources Assistant, you'll help keep HR operations organized, accurate, and responsive.
Your responsibilities will include:
  • Maintain accurate and confidential employee personnel files.
  • Complete HR data entry and maintain employee records within HR systems.
  • Process new-hire paperwork and onboarding documentation.
  • Ensure completion of I-9s and required employment and onboarding forms.
  • Track onboarding progress and follow up on outstanding documentation.
  • Coordinate interviews with candidates and hiring managers.
  • Assist with applicant tracking and other recruiting activities.
  • Coordinate background checks, pre-employment screenings, and onboarding requirements.
  • Prepare materials for new-hire orientation.
  • Facilitate new employee orientation after appropriate training.
  • Communicate with department leaders regarding new hires and onboarding progress.
  • Track required employee training, certifications, and compliance documentation.
  • Assist with HR audits and regulatory documentation.
  • Provide administrative support for employee relations matters.
  • Assist with documentation related to investigations, corrective actions, and employee concerns.
  • Respond to routine employee questions regarding HR processes and policies.
  • Escalate sensitive or complex employee matters to the Human Resources Director.
  • Prepare reports and help maintain HR metrics.
  • Assist with special HR projects and general department organization.
You'll Be a Great Fit If You:
  • Have at least 2 years of Human Resources experience.
  • Have practical experience with onboarding, employee records, and HR documentation.
  • Are highly organized and comfortable managing multiple priorities.
  • Have excellent attention to detail.
  • Understand the importance of maintaining strict confidentiality.
  • Have strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Are proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Can work independently while also collaborating closely with HR leadership.
  • Enjoy helping employees and providing strong internal customer service.
  • Are dependable and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred, But Not Required
Previous experience in healthcare, senior living, or long-term care is a plus, but it is not required. Candidates with strong HR experience in other industries are encouraged to apply.
Additional preferred qualifications include:
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Experience coordinating new-hire orientation and onboarding.
  • Familiarity with HRIS systems.

SHRM or PHR certification is not required. Practical, hands-on HR experience is more important for this position.
Schedule & Flexibility
This position is designed to remain part-time, with approximately 20-24 hours per week.
The preferred schedule is three days per week, with Wednesday and Thursday being the primary coverage days.
Potential schedules include:
Tuesday / Wednesday / Thursday
or
Wednesday / Thursday / Friday
Some flexibility may be available based on candidate availability. Additional hours may be needed during the initial training period.
Compensation
$25.00-$30.00 per hour, depending on experience.
The position will initially begin on a contract basis with the opportunity to transition into a permanent part-time role.
Why Consider This Opportunity?
This is an excellent opportunity for an HR professional who wants to stay active in their career while maintaining the flexibility of a part-time schedule.
You'll gain exposure to multiple areas of Human Resources, including recruiting, onboarding, compliance, employee relations support, HR administration, and reporting.
As you become comfortable in the position, there will also be opportunities to take on additional responsibilities and become an increasingly important resource for employees and department leadership.
Ready to Join the Team?
If you're an experienced HR professional who is organized, dependable, approachable, and detail-oriented, we'd like to hear from you.
Bring your HR experience to a position where you'll have the opportunity to support employees, work closely with leadership, and help keep day-to-day HR operations running smoothly.
