The Tides Inn is a beloved waterfront, luxury resort nestled on Carter’s Creek in Irvington, Virginia. The resort has been a cherished resort for generations and has recently undergone a number of renovations and enhancements that are helping the resort in repositioning the brand and overall experience. The resort features 70 luxurious accommodations, tennis and pickleball courts, full-service spa, an 18-hole golf course, a functioning farm, Maker’s Space (artistic activities), its own large marina, and two cherished restaurants including Salt & Meadow Restaurant. As the resort has evolved, it is becoming more widely recognized for its elite programming, culinary experiences, and its commitment to environmental stewardship in addition to world-class service.

Job Summary

The Accounting Specialist supports the Accounting Department by performing a variety of accounting, accounts payable, payroll support, cashiering, and financial administrative functions for the resort. This role ensures financial transactions are accurately recorded, properly supported, and processed in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), company policies, and applicable regulations. The successful candidate demonstrates strong attention to detail, maintains accurate and timely records, and works collaboratively with Accounting, Food & Beverage, and other departments across the resort. Hospitality or resort experience is preferred, particularly experience with F&B cashiering, daily financial transactions, and high-volume operational environments. This position plays an important role in maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the resort's financial operations.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this role.
  • Processes accounts payable transactions, including reviewing invoices for accuracy, appropriate approvals, supporting documentation, coding, and timely payment processing.
  • Maintains accurate accounting records and assists with the proper recording, reconciliation, and classification of financial transactions in accordance with GAAP and company policies.
  • Supports payroll-related processes by reviewing payroll information for accuracy and assisting with compliance with applicable federal and Virginia payroll requirements.
  • Performs cashiering and cash-handling functions, including reviewing daily transactions, reconciling cash, investigating discrepancies, and ensuring appropriate documentation.
  • Supports daily revenue and financial reporting processes, including the review and reconciliation of transactions generated by Food & Beverage and other resort operations.
  • Assists with bank, credit card, general ledger, and other account reconciliations and researches discrepancies as needed.
  • Reviews financial documentation for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with established accounting procedures.
  • Maintains organized and confidential financial records and supporting documentation.
  • Communicates with vendors and internal departments regarding invoices, payments, account questions, and financial discrepancies.
  • Assists with month-end and year-end closing activities and provides supporting documentation as requested.
  • Provides accounting support to resort departments and assists with financial projects, audits, reporting, and other administrative duties as assigned.
  • Protects confidential financial, payroll, employee, guest, and company information.
  • Identifies opportunities to improve accounting processes, controls, efficiency, and accuracy.
  • Exemplifies the Tides Inn Mission and Values in all interactions with guests, colleagues, vendors, and business partners.

Required Experience and Skills

  • Previous experience in accounting, accounts payable, payroll support, cashiering, or a related financial operations role.
  • Working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Working knowledge of accounts payable processes, including invoice review, coding, approvals, and payment processing.
  • Working knowledge of payroll practices and applicable payroll regulations.
  • Experience handling cash, reconciling transactions, and investigating discrepancies.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality when handling financial, payroll, employee, and company information.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to identify discrepancies and independently research and resolve routine accounting issues.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous accounting experience within a hotel, resort, restaurant, or other hospitality environment.
  • Experience with Food & Beverage cashiering, point-of-sale systems, daily revenue reconciliation, or hotel/resort financial operations.
  • Experience with hospitality accounting or property-management systems.
  • Associate's or bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Hospitality Management, or a related field.

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate's or bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Hospitality, or a related field preferred.

Certifications and Licenses

  • Accounting or payroll-related certification is preferred but not required.
