Job description

Zoo Security Officer

Responsible for the monitoring of night security operations by securing the Zoo, completing animal related assignments as directed by animal care staff, security checks of Zoo grounds, parking lots and buildings, and writing reports as required. This position provides security and safety to all Zoo animals and properties during off peak hours at the Zoo and in the absence of the regular animal care staff.

Reporting Relationship

Reports directly to the Security Supervisor.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  1. Provide a uniformed security presence on Zoo campus.
  2. Maintain security of all Zoo properties, foot patrols of Zoo grounds, parking lots, and buildings.
  3. Maintain professional demeanor during stressful situations.
  4. Clear Zoo of daily guests.
  5. Perform regular rounds of Zoo property, checking exhibits, buildings and animals as well as perimeter fences.
  6. Zoo security is required 24/7/365 and working hours may include day shifts, swing shifts, and overnight shifts including weekends and holidays.
  7. Working knowledge of emergency protocols, zoo physical layout, OSHA standards and locations of all utility lines.
  8. Adhere to departmental and zoo-wide policies.
  9. Must be willing to maintain required trainings.
  10. Knowledge of procedures for emergencies, including intruders, fire, police and incident reporting.
  11. A member of the Emergency Response Team (ERT).
  12. Provide first-aid to guests, staff, and volunteers.
  13. Complete report forms for incidents and accidents that occur on Zoo grounds.
  14. Ensure and uphold outstanding guest service.
  15. May work in inclement weather or extreme weather conditions.
  16. Help locate missing guests.
  17. Knowledge of Zoo rules and ability to enforce the rules.
  18. Assist public with minor vehicle issues.
  19. Make deliveries within the Zoo as needed.
  20. Other duties as assigned by Zoo management.

Qualifications, Skills And Abilities

Education and Experience

High School Diploma or Equivalent

State of Utah EMS Certification Preferred

  • Ability to work under diverse and often harsh weather conditions, varied hours and shifts.
  • Lift over 50 pounds, bend, stoop, jump, stretch and move quickly to avoid dangerous situations.
  • Work under pressure, handle emergency situations, questions and complaints.

Work Environment

Incumbent performs in an indoor and outdoor environment, exposure to the seasonal elements, dust, and allergens. Tasks require a variety of physical activities, which can include muscular strain. Eye, hand, finger dexterity required to perform essential functions. Must be able to listen and respond to a handheld radio. Ability to stoop, bend, twist, turn, climb, jump, run when necessary, and move quickly to avoid dangerous situations. Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
