Job description

Job Summary:

The histology lab assistant ensures that cases will be signed out with accuracy and in a timely manner. This position is responsible for organizing slides in folders; applying labels; collaborating with requisitions and dispatching to the appropriate pathologist according to the established schedule. The lab assistant will follow the direction of his supervisor while taking initiative in performing and promoting quality and efficiency within the department.

Job Requirements:

  • Assemble all materials needed at the table
  • Sort frozen section slides, bone marrow slides
  • Arrange requisition according to location
  • Specimen entry, numbering slides
  • Sorting cases according to priority for courier pick-up
  • Maintaining safety standards and documentation of the histology lab according to guidelines and protocols
  • Prepare and package cases for delivery and courier pick-up
  • Stream-line and prioritize work load
  • Assist in filing blocks
  • Communicate department activities with supervisor
  • Assures activities of the histology department are coordinated to insure quality patient care and lean processes of the department
  • Consults with LIS personnel to troubleshoot LIS problems and enhancements
  • Participates in the development of department -wide policies and procedures
  • Maintains all section records relating to operation
  • Reviews and summarizes records and prepares reports for management review
  • Develops and maintains cooperative working relationships with clients and SEPA pathologists
  • Provides advice and direction to subordinates for technical problems encountered
  • Explains and demonstrates appropriate techniques or methods as necessary
  • Performs routine procedures in achieving workload demands

Skills/Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Must be able to communicate effectively by telephone, e-mail and in person with customers, co-workers and supervisors
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations
