To thrive as a Histology Technologist, you need in-depth knowledge of tissue processing, microtomy, staining techniques, and a relevant degree or certification such as HT(ASCP). Competency with laboratory information systems, automated tissue processors, microtomes, and immunohistochemistry equipment is commonly required. Strong attention to detail, manual dexterity, and effective communication skills help ensure accuracy and reliable collaboration with pathology teams. These abilities are essential to produce high-quality slides for diagnosis, maintain lab efficiency, and support patient care.
A typical day for a Histology Technologist involves preparing and processing tissue samples, embedding them in paraffin, sectioning using a microtome, and staining to highlight cellular structures. You'll review specimen requirements, maintain equipment, and ensure slides meet quality standards for pathologist review. Team collaboration is common, especially with pathologists, lab technologists, and support staff, to keep workflow efficient and resolve any issues with specimens. Expect a fast-paced environment where attention to detail and time management are key to supporting accurate diagnoses.
A Histology Technologist prepares tissue samples for microscopic examination by pathologists to help diagnose diseases. They use specialized techniques such as embedding, sectioning, and staining to preserve and highlight tissue structures. Their work is essential in medical research and patient care, supporting accurate diagnoses and treatment plans. Histology Technologists typically work in hospitals, research laboratories, and diagnostic facilities. Attention to detail and knowledge of laboratory procedures are crucial in this role.
