Job description

Join the MD Anderson Cancer Center Histology team and play a vital role in supporting the preparation of diagnostic and research specimens that directly impact patient care and scientific discovery. This opportunity is ideal for a detail-oriented laboratory professional who enjoys working in a collaborative environment and supporting pathologists, laboratory staff, and researchers through a variety of specimen processing and laboratory support activities.
The Histology Lab Assistant provides essential support to the Histology laboratory by assisting pathologists and laboratory personnel in the preparation and management of diagnostic and research materials. Responsibilities include organizing, labeling, tracking, and retrieving patient specimens and materials using laboratory information systems, locating and delivering slides and paraffin blocks to pathologists and laboratory staff, and supporting histology technicians with specimen procurement, processing, and slide preparation activities.
The ideal candidate will possess strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to maintain accuracy while working in a fast-paced laboratory environment. Candidates should be comfortable working with laboratory information systems, handling biological specimens, and supporting multiple laboratory workflows while ensuring compliance with quality and safety standards.
Additional responsibilities include preparing laboratory solutions, assisting with equipment maintenance, receiving and organizing laboratory supplies and chemicals, maintaining inventory, and ensuring laboratory areas remain clean and compliant with safety and regulatory requirements. This role requires someone who is dependable, proactive, and able to work effectively as part of a team while supporting the daily operations of a high-volume histology laboratory.

**This is a part-time 20 hours a week position. The ideal candidate will be a current student of MD Anderson's school of health professions**
KEY FUNCTIONS
1. Provide direct assistant to laboratory staff and pathologists in their preparation of diagnostic and/or research material.
2. Utilize laboratory informatics system to access patient information and to organize, label and track patient materials relevant to the histology laboratories.
3. Locate and deliver slides/blocks and corresponding information to pathologists, fellows and other departmental/divisional employees as needed.
4. Assist histology technicians with procurement and processing of specimens and preparation of slides.
5. Prepare solutions and maintain laboratory equipment.
6. Maintain cleanliness of laboratories according to safety and regulatory guidelines.
7. Receive, unpack, store and date chemicals and supplies.
8. Performs all duties following established safety guidelines
