Job description

PURPOSE OF POSITION To assist the pharmacist with the preparation and dispensing of medications. Deliver the medications to the nurse, patient, medication room, storage location, or automated dispensing machine. Interviews patients and/or family members in order to obtain and document patients' medication histories in the Aultman Hospital information system, Cerner Millennium. Retrieves and delivers discharge medication prescriptions for/to patients. RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS of ALL Technicians Operations - Inpatient Pharmacy
  • Ability to acquire skills necessary to operate department computer application packages:
    • Including but not limited to: Cerner Millennium, Omnicell Connect-Rx and its subsystems, Omnicell Enterprise Medication Management, Aethon MedEx TubeSafe, Aethon MedEx TraySafe, Baxter DoseEdge and KitCheck
  • Performs tasks related to packaging medications and refilling automated dispensing systems on nursing units or within the department.
  • Performs tasks related to filling medication orders and maintaining both paper and computer based records.
  • Supplies medications to and stocks patient care areas and appropriately charges for items supplied.
Operations - Retail Pharmacy
  • Ability to acquire skills necessary to operate department computer application packages:
    • Including but not limited to: Cerner Millennium, RxSafe, Rx30, Kirby-Lester, and PickPoint.
  • Ability to read and transcribe required information from prescription orders.
  • Resolve Third Party rejections and complete any manual claim forms.
  • Perform all register transactions in adherence with Aultman policy and procedures.
Additional functions expected of all technicians
  • Able to run all pharmacy department technology knowledgeably; able to troubleshoot problems if equipment fails; able to disseminate knowledge to fellow and new staff members.
  • Pull outdated, damaged and recalled merchandise and deliver to buyer for return.
  • Collecting data, conducting quality monitors and completing documentation as assigned.
  • Maintaining logs, records and other required documentation accurately, filing documents in appropriate locations.
  • Performing cycle counts and maintaining accurate inventories.
  • Answering the telephone with compassion and a smile. Return patient, customer, or nurse calls in a timely fashion and provide follow-up to their questions when necessary.
  • Participate in all required departmental meetings.
  • Maintain customer/patient confidentiality according to HIPAA and company standards.
  • Work well within a team environment: by accepting and offering honest and constructive feedback; by supporting team goals and encouraging other team members; and by collaborating with patient care team members to consolidate work, solve problems, create new methods and/or reduce costs.
  • Shows flexibility and adaptability in meeting scheduling demands of department, and can adapt to changes in workflow easily.
  • Assumes accountability for duties performed on a daily basis and demonstrates behaviors consistent with the departments' expectations.
  • Communicates with management team about known issues or improvements that can be made within or outside the department.
  • Completes all required training programs or materials in a timely manner.
  • Knowledgeable of the Aultman Employee Handbook (available on the Aultman Employee Portal). Reviews the handbook annually.
All technicians will be expected to be competent in at least 1 of the following 3 skill sets within 12 months of employment in the Pharmacy Department in order to continue employment in the Pharmacy Department. Concierge Technician
  • Documenting findings by accurately entering all available medication-related data into the hospital information system, Cerner Millennium.
  • Advanced knowledge of brand and generic drugs and their uses.
  • Obtains and documents patient medication histories following applicable guidelines and regulatory requirements by:
    • Identifying and prioritizing patient interviews based on workflow and admissions.
    • Interviewing patients and/or family members to obtain medication history including drug allergies and reactions.
    • Compiling a complete list of patient's home medications including over the counter drugs and herbal supplements including drug name, dosage, frequency, compliance and last dose taken.
  • Promotes, obtains, charges for, and delivers medications for patients ready for discharge.
  • Reporting any entry problems to the pharmacy informatics team.
Sterile IV Compounding Technician
  • Is able to change workflow based on the priority of orders as they populate.
  • Is knowledgeable about and always dresses and works in accordance with USP 797 standards.
  • Is able to compound sterile products or admixtures competently and safely as determined by supervising pharmacist.
  • Highly reliable and competent with all IV Room related software's and automation.
    • Including but not limited to: Baxter DoseEdge, Baxter Intellifill I.V. Robot, Omnicell i.v.Station Robot, Omnicell Connect-Rx, Simplifi797.
  • Reports any software or hardware related issues to pharmacy informatics team.
  • Is able to prepare quality products in the event systems fail, or items are not in the system.
  • Is a critical thinker
Narcotic vault technician
  • Retrieves and records all controlled substances for distribution to AcuDose cabinets and patient specific requests.
  • Responds to daytime repair requests for AcuDose. Follows up on all maintenance requests for AcuDose.
  • Performs additional duties associated with every day responsibilities such as; receiving narcotic order, troubleshooting narcotic discrepancies, processing monthly interdepartmental billing, and filling medication trays.
  • Prepares required paperwork for Drug Enforcement Agency tracking purposes.
Job Requirements
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or equivalent GED is required.
  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in college is preferred.
  • Candidate must be registered as a Technician Trainee, Registered Pharmacy Technician, or Certified Pharmacy Technician with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy. All Trainee and Registered Technicians will be expected to become licensed as a Certified Pharmacy Technician once training is complete. Applicant must pass a national certification examination (PTCB or ExCPT) at time of hire or within the first 90 days of employment if not already completed. License must be in good standing.
  • Applicable background checks must be passed.
  • Prior experience, in retail pharmacy, nursing home pharmacy, or hospital pharmacy is preferred.
  • Must be proficient in the use of computers to input patient billing data.
