Job description

Responsibilities

Job Summary: Responsible for assisting with the development and onsite implementation of HazMat response procedures and protocols. Ensures preparedness and swift response to emergencies such as chemical release(s); minimizing risk to Partners, communities, products, and infrastructure. Collaborates with Emergency Preparedness, Security and site leadership.  Responsible for the onsite HazMat response procedures and protocols. Ensures preparedness and swift response to emergencies such as chemical releases, minimizing risk to partners, products, and infrastructure and the community. Provides support for critical regulatory compliance programs related to hazardous waste, chemical management, wastewater, stormwater management and other critical compliance programs and procedures.  

Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions:

  • Champion a safetyfirst culture, ensuring Health & Safety remains the top priority through rigorous adherence to policies, safe work practices, and industry best practices.
  • Assist with risk assessments to identify potential hazards and ensure appropriate mitigation strategies are in place.
  • Coordinate and lead exercises / tabletop drills (chemical release, evacuation) per the approved Facility Response Plan to ensure readiness and safety of all Partners and communities.
  • Support training activities by helping schedule, prepare materials, and assist instructors in delivering emergency response, safety procedures, and incident reporting training for all Partners at the facility.
  • Respond to emergencies / incidents.
  • Serve as a point of contact for emergency services (fire, police, EMS) during Hazmat incidents and maintain relationships with local agencies and third-party emergency response companies.
  • Assist with maintaining emergency supplies throughout the facilities.
  • Collaborate with crossfunctional teams Safety, Security, HR, Maintenance, and Operations to ensure alignment of HEB safety goals and emergency preparedness.
  • Support compliance efforts by helping ensure adherence to local, state, and federal safety and emergency response regulations.
  • Conducts site inspections, audits and operational process evaluations making sure spill response and management, waste handling, wastewater management and storm water management is managed to drive compliance, minimize risk and constantly improved as needed to protect partners, our assets and the community.
  • Coordinates with the environmental health and safety team as needed to stay relevant to regulatory changes, support changes as needed to existing processes and leads discipline in operational execution across all areas.
  • Support training, drills, communication and incident investigation as needed to drive culture and accountability across.
  • Will have the courage to speak up and address any risks or concerns as needed with urgency.

Qualifications & Key Requirements:

Guides the development of policies, processes, and procedures in area of expertise. Majority of work efforts are spent managing large projects and/or processes.

Coaches, directs, oversees, and/or reviews the work of lower-level professionals.

Networks with contacts outside own area of expertise using knowledge of interrelationships between disciplines. Advises others on complex matters using knowledge and persuasion.

Work Experience:

  • 7+ years of relevant experience preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Advanced knowledge of hazmat response protocols and regulatory requirements (OSHA, NFPA, EPA and Local AHJ’s).
  • The ability to remain calm and lead in high-pressure situations.
  • Excellent communication, training, and organizational skills.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and incident reporting systems.

Education:

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in emergency management, occupational safety and health management, or environmental engineering.  

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Certification in 40-hour HAZWOPER, FEMA Incident Command System (ICS levels 100, 200, 300, 700, and 800).

Physical Demands & Working Conditions:

  • Function in a fast-paced, industrial environment
  • Travel by car or plane with overnight stays
  • Ability to walk and stand for extended periods in a warehouse environment
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and wear appropriate PPE when needed
  • Work extended hours; Available for on-call support during emergencies, including evenings, weekends, or holidays
