What is a healthcare interoperability job?

A Healthcare Interoperability job focuses on ensuring seamless data exchange between different healthcare systems, applications, and organizations. Professionals in this role work with standards like HL7, FHIR, and APIs to enable secure and efficient communication. They collaborate with IT teams, healthcare providers, and vendors to integrate electronic health records (EHRs) and other digital systems. The goal is to enhance patient care, streamline operations, and comply with regulatory requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in healthcare interoperability roles?

Professionals in Healthcare Interoperability often encounter challenges such as integrating diverse electronic health record (EHR) systems, navigating varying data standards, and ensuring that sensitive patient information remains secure and compliant with regulations. Collaboration across IT, clinical, and administrative departments requires effective communication and the ability to translate complex technical issues into practical solutions for stakeholders. Rapidly evolving standards and regulatory requirements also require ongoing education and adaptability. Overcoming these challenges is critical to facilitating accurate, efficient data exchange and ultimately supporting better patient outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the healthcare interoperability position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Healthcare Interoperability, you need a solid understanding of healthcare data standards (such as HL7, FHIR, and CDA), health information technology, and compliance regulations like HIPAA, often supported by degrees in health informatics or computer science. Experience with interoperability platforms, EHR systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner), interface engines, and relevant certifications (like CPHIMS or HL7) is highly valuable. Strong analytical skills, problem-solving ability, and excellent communication help professionals collaborate effectively across clinical, technical, and administrative teams. These competencies ensure seamless data exchange, regulatory compliance, and improved patient care quality across diverse healthcare settings.

What is the role of healthcare interoperability in healthcare?

Healthcare interoperability is a key aspect of healthcare jobs, involving the ability of different health information systems to exchange, interpret, and use patient data effectively. It enables seamless data sharing among providers, improves care coordination, and supports accurate decision-making, often requiring knowledge of standards like HL7 and FHIR. Professionals in this field work to ensure secure, efficient data exchange to enhance patient outcomes.

Job description

Frontera is reimagining how children with autism and other behavioral health needs get the care they deserve. We bring together world-class clinicians, technologists, and autism specialists to build cutting-edge AI tools that help care teams work smarter and spend more time with the children and families who need them most.
Our platform is HIPAA-compliant and designed for the real-world needs of behavioral health teams - from psychologists to ABA therapists. By combining evidence-based care with powerful technology, we're expanding access to high-quality services for families everywhere.
Our Mission
Frontera exists to close the care gap: every child, no matter where they live, should be able to access effective behavioral healthcare.
The Role
We are seeking a passionate and experienced Engineering Lead to join our growing team and play a pivotal role in building our Integrations Platform. You will own the systems that connect our platform with external partners, data sources, and internal services - enabling seamless, secure, and scalable data exchange.
You will lead the design and development of integration architecture, including robust APIs, data pipelines, and partner integrations, while helping guide technical direction in collaboration with senior engineers and cross-functional stakeholders.
This is a backend-leaning, highly hands-on technical leadership role. Today, you'll spend the vast majority of your time building - deep in the code, shaping architecture decisions, and unblocking execution.
As the team grows, this role is expected to evolve into a player-coach position, with your first direct report joining in the near term. We're looking for someone who wants to keep their hands on the keyboard now while building the muscle to lead.
What You'll Do
  • Integrations & Platform Ownership:Lead the design and development of our integrations platform, including APIs, data pipelines, and third-party system integrations (e.g., EHRs, partner systems, internal services).
  • Technical Leadership:Drive the architecture and implementation of scalable, secure, and reliable integration systems. Establish best practices for API design, data modeling, and system interoperability.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration:Partner closely with product, design, operations, and external stakeholders to translate integration requirements into technical solutions. Collaborate across US and India-based engineering teams to ensure alignment and execution.
  • System Reliability & Performance:Own the performance, monitoring, and reliability of integration systems. Proactively identify and resolve bottlenecks, data inconsistencies, and failure points.
  • User & Partner Experience:Improve the experience for both internal teams and external partners by building intuitive, well-documented, and reliable integration workflows and tooling.
  • Architecture & Development:Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code while setting standards for the team. Contribute directly to critical parts of the system.
  • Mentorship & Team Development:Support and mentor engineers through technical guidance, collaboration, and code reviews while helping foster a high-performing engineering culture. There is potential for this role to evolve into formal engineering management responsibilities over time as the team grows.
  • Continuous Improvement:Stay current with best practices in distributed systems, APIs, and data integration. Continuously improve system scalability, security, and maintainability.

Qualifications
  • 6+ years of experience in full-stack or backend-leaning engineering, with strong experience building APIs, integration systems, or distributed backend services
  • Experience providing technical leadership, mentoring engineers, or leading complex backend initiatives across cross-functional teams
  • Experience building and scaling integration platforms, APIs, or data pipelines in production environments
  • Strong understanding of system design, distributed systems, and data flow between services
  • Experience working with third-party integrations (e.g., healthcare systems, EHRs, SaaS platforms, or partner APIs) is highly preferred
  • Comfortable operating in fast-paced, ambiguous, zero-to-one environments
  • Strong product mindset - focused on building practical, reliable solutions that deliver real user and business impact
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to drive alignment across technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Experience working with globally distributed teams is a plus
  • Interest in healthcare and/or experience working with regulated data (HIPAA, PHI) is a plus
  • Familiarity with AI/ML systems and their integration into product workflows is a plus
  • Interest in mentoring and growing into broader technical or organizational leadership over time

We are open to candidates across multiple levels for this role. Final level and compensation will be determined through the interview process based on experience, technical depth, and scope.
Expected Salary Range in Denver: $160,00 to $220,000
Expected Salary Range in San Francisco: $175,000 to $240,000
