POSITION OVERVIEW & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director, Healthcare leads the strategic direction, development, growth and operational management of engineering consulting services within the healthcare sector. This role is pivotal in delivering innovative, compliant, and efficient engineering solutions that enhance healthcare facility performance and patient outcomes. The director oversees multidisciplinary teams, ensuring projects meet rigorous industry standards, regulatory requirements, and client expectations. They act as a key liaison between clients, regulatory bodies, and internal teams to drive project success and foster long-term partnerships. Ultimately, this position ensures that engineering initiatives align with the evolving needs of healthcare environments, promoting safety, sustainability, and technological advancement.

The Director utilizes advanced leadership and communication skills daily to guide diverse engineering teams and engage effectively with healthcare clients and stakeholders. Technical expertise in healthcare engineering standards and regulations is essential for reviewing and approving complex project designs and ensuring compliance. Strategic thinking and business acumen are applied to develop growth initiatives, manage budgets, and drive successful project outcomes. Problem-solving skills enable the director to address unique challenges in healthcare environments, balancing innovation with safety and regulatory demands. Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:

Strategic Focus

  • Influence, align and implement strategic plans for healthcare engineering consulting services to meet current & future organizational goals and client needs.
  • Communicate and share strategic plans with the leadership team and cascade throughout the healthcare division.
  • Establish and nurture relationships with key stakeholders including hospital administrators, regulatory agencies, and industry partners.
  • Drive business development efforts by identifying new opportunities, preparing proposals, and participating in client presentations.
  • Collaborate with healthcare clients to understand their engineering challenges and provide tailored, innovative solutions that comply with healthcare regulations and standards.

Leadership

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of engineers and consultants, fostering professional growth and high performance.
  • Develop future leaders to fulfill succession planning models.
  • Function as a thought leader at healthcare industry conferences or events.

Operations and Project Oversight

  • Oversee project management activities including budgeting, scheduling, resource allocation, and quality assurance to ensure timely and successful project delivery.
  • Lead a large team of professionals through change management, contract management and risk management.
  • Make project decisions by weighing resource allocation, utilization efficiency, quality control, and strategic planning efforts.
  • Ensure all engineering designs and consulting services adhere to safety, environmental, and ethical standards specific to healthcare facilities.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of healthcare industry trends, codes, and technologies to guide consulting practices and ensure compliance.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, or related field) from an accredited institution.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license or EIT/FE holder with willingness to obtain PE.
  • Minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in engineering consulting, with at least 5 years in a leadership role, preferably within the healthcare sector.
  • Proven track record managing complex healthcare engineering projects and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience with the business development process including meeting with prospective & current customers, scope opportunities, writing proposals and negotiating contracts.
  • Deep knowledge of the healthcare industry by actively engaging in the community via conferences, tradeshows, etc.
  • Proven leadership experience hiring, developing & managing direct & indirect reports.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of healthcare facility codes, standards (such as NFPA, ASHRAE, FGI Guidelines), and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong business acumen with confidence around managing business & project financials.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US on a permanent basis without the need for work sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Represent the company in a professional matter.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with others.
  • Knowledge of computer technology and specific areas of application, including MS Office.
  • Travel: May include up to 25% domestic travel if local to Cincinnati. Outside of Cincinnati, travel could be up to 50%.

Preferred

  • Masterโ€™s degree in Engineering, Engineering Management, Healthcare Engineering, or Business Administration.
  • Experience with sustainable design and green building certifications (e.g., LEED).
  • Familiarity with healthcare technology integration, including medical gas systems, HVAC for critical environments, and building automation systems.
  • Strong background in business development and client relationship management within the healthcare industry.
  • Certification in Project Management (PMP) or equivalent.

Working Conditions

  • Some work locations will feature the tough terrain typical of construction sites or require lifting or moving field testing equipment.
