Head Operator information

What is a head operator?

Head Operators are professionals responsible for overseeing the operation of machinery, equipment, or industrial processes in facilities such as factories, plants, or construction sites. They supervise other operators, ensure safe and efficient workflows, and troubleshoot any issues that arise during operations. Head Operators also coordinate maintenance, enforce safety regulations, and may be involved in training new staff or implementing process improvements. Their leadership ensures that production goals are met while maintaining quality and safety standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a head operator, and why are they important?

To excel as a Head Operator, you need in-depth knowledge of operational processes, leadership abilities, and experience in the relevant industry, often supported by vocational training or technical certifications. Familiarity with machinery controls, SCADA systems, safety protocols, and maintenance management software is typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and team management skills help drive efficiency and ensure safety. These competencies are crucial for overseeing smooth operations, minimizing downtime, and maintaining compliance with industry regulations.

What are some typical challenges faced by a head operator in managing production teams, and how can they be effectively addressed?

As a Head Operator, common challenges include maintaining consistent production quality, addressing equipment malfunctions promptly, and ensuring effective communication across shifts. Managing a diverse team also requires balancing individual strengths while fostering a collaborative environment. Proactive maintenance scheduling, regular team briefings, and ongoing training initiatives help mitigate these challenges and keep operations running smoothly.

Job description

Head Coach (Multi-Unit Leader)

Reports to: Area Director
Location: Houston, TX
Status: Full-time, salaried

Overview

The Head Coach is the heartbeat of our Zalat Pizza locations—responsible for driving excellence through people, product, and process. This role blends leadership, development, and hands-on action. The ideal Head Coach is a motivator, teacher, and operator who leads by example and builds teams that deliver consistent, high-quality pizza and unforgettable guest experiences.

Core Responsibilities

Leadership & Development (≈70%)

  • Lead, coach, and inspire a team of Line Coaches, Keys, and hourly Zealots across both stores.
  • Create individualized development plans and drive accountability through regular feedback and follow-up.
  • Model ownership and Zalat values in every aspect of leadership—building strong, empowered teams.
  • Maintain a strong presence in both stores, fostering culture, consistency, and connection.
  • Identify leadership potential and build future bench strength through active succession planning.

Operations & Standards (≈20%)

  • Ensure stores deliver consistent product quality—every pizza, every time.
  • Reinforce “the basics”: dough procedure and stretch, sauce and cheese lock, bake, cut, garnish, sheriff (final check), and triple check (accuracy validation).
  • Support daily operations as needed, including working shifts, making pizzas, and setting the standard for hustle and precision.
  • Partner with GMs to manage labor, food cost, and overall financial health of both locations.
  • Conduct store walks and audits with a coaching mindset—improving, not policing.

Community & Marketing (≈10%)

  • Represent Zalat in the community with authenticity and enthusiasm.
  • Support local store marketing initiatives and partnerships that build brand loyalty and drive sales.
  • Collaborate with the Area Director and marketing team on creative, localized engagement strategies.

Key Attributes

  • Ownership mindset: You don’t wait for someone else to fix it—you make it happen.
  • People-first leadership: You believe success starts with strong teams and clear expectations.
  • Operational excellence: You balance heart and hustle with sharp attention to detail.
  • Culture keeper: You bring the fun, protect the standards, and keep Zalat’s vibe alive.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of multi-unit or high-volume management experience.
  • Proven record of developing teams and promoting from within.
  • Strong operational knowledge—pizza experience a plus, but a passion for great food is essential.
  • Flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
  • Reliable transportation between assigned stores.

Perks

  • Competitive salary + bonus potential.
  • Growth opportunities within a rapidly expanding brand.
  • Zalat culture: authentic people, great pizza, no corporate fluff.
