EVALUATION: Evaluations conducted as defined in West Virginia Board of Education Policy 5310 and PCBOE Policy 3220.

JOB DESCRIPTIONย
The Head Coach serves as a key member of the school's athletic and educational leadership team, working under the direct supervision of the Athletic Director and Building Principal. This position is an extension of the school's broader mission to support the growth, development, and well-being of every student athlete.
The primary purpose of this role is to provide leadership and oversight for all aspects of the athletic program while fostering the comprehensive development of student-athletes academically, athletically, and in character. The Head Coach is responsible for establishing and maintaining a program that reflects the school's commitment to academic excellence, positive character development, sportsmanship, leadership, and responsible citizenship. Through every interaction with student athletes, families, faculty, officials, and the wider community, the Head Coach is expected to model and promote the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and respect.
Consistent with WVSSAC 127 CSR 4, 127-4-3.2.b, the Head Coach shall recognize that interscholastic athletics exist for the promotion of the physical, mental, social, and emotional well-being of students, and that the most important values of athletic competition are derived from playing the game fairly, with the health and safety of each participant held above all else.
The Head Coach shall provide effective leadership in planning, organizing, supervising, and evaluating all aspects of the athletic program; ensure compliance with WVSSAC regulations and school policies; promote a positive and inclusive team culture; and develop student-athletes who demonstrate excellence both on the court and in the classroom. The coach is expected to cultivate an environment that emphasizes teamwork, discipline, accountability, and lifelong learning while serving as a positive role model for all participants.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED required; bachelor's degree preferred.
- Valid West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) Coaching Authorization, or documented eligibility to obtain authorization, in compliance with WVBE Policy 5209 and WVSSAC regulations.
- Successful completion of a fingerprint-based criminal background check in accordance with WVBE Policy 5209 and county board of education requirements.
- Completion of all WVSSAC and NFHS-required coaching education courses prior to participation in practices or contests, including:
- Concussion in Sports
- Sudden Cardiac Arrest
- Heat Illness Prevention
- Any additional courses required by WVSSAC, WVDE, or the county board of education.
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification.
- Ability to maintain annual authorization and certification requirements, including completion of all required WVDE, WVSSAC, and county board documentation.

- Previous playing or coaching experience at the high school or collegiate level

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESย
Program Leadership
- Direct and oversee all aspects of the assigned athletic program.
- Establish and communicate program goals, expectations, standards, and procedures.
- Develop and maintain a program culture emphasizing sportsmanship, accountability, integrity, teamwork, and academic achievement.
- Promote the athletic program in a manner consistent with school and district expectations.
- Recruit, supervise, mentor, and evaluate assistant coaches, volunteers, student managers, and other authorized support personnel.
- Ensure all assistants and support personnel understand and comply with district policies, WVSSAC regulations, and program expectations.
- Conduct meetings and training necessary to ensure all personnel understand program expectations, safety procedures, and student supervision requirements.
Relationships and Communication
- Cooperate fully with the Principal, Athletic Director, faculty, staff, and district administration.
- Establish and maintain positive and professional relationships with student-athletes, parents/guardians, faculty, community members, officials, opponents, and media representatives.
- Maintain timely, accurate, and professional communication with student-athletes and parents/guardians through approved communication channels.
- Attend required school, conference, league, county, and WVSSAC meetings.
- Participate in professional development opportunities related to coaching, leadership, safety, and student-athlete development.
- Represent the school and athletic program professionally in all verbal, written, electronic, and social media communications.
- Refrain from making unauthorized public statements on behalf of the school, athletic department, or district.
Student-Athlete Development
- Promote the academic achievement and eligibility of all student-athletes.
- Monitor student-athlete conduct, attendance, and academic progress.
- Teach and model appropriate citizenship, sportsmanship, leadership, self-discipline, and respect.
- Foster an environment supporting the mental, emotional, physical, and social well-being of student-athletes.
- Ensure fair and equitable opportunities for student participation and development.
- Encourage lifelong values associated with participation in educational athletics.
- Promote team cohesion, leadership development, personal responsibility, and a positive team culture rooted in respect, hard work, and integrity.
Practice Planning and Instruction
- Organize and conduct safe, structured, and developmentally appropriate practices.
- Prepare seasonal, weekly, and daily practice plans designed to improve individual and team performance.
- Teach sport-specific skills, strategies, and rules appropriate to the level of competition.
- Implement conditioning programs consistent with accepted safety standards and NFHS best practices.
- Ensure all activities are physically safe, age-appropriate, and appropriate to participants' skill levels.
- Evaluate individual and team performance and make instructional adjustments as needed.
- Devote the time and energy necessary to fulfill coaching responsibilities before, during, and after the season, including approved offseason activities.
Practice Facility Preparation and Safety
- Arrive at practice facilities prior to student-athlete arrival to assess facility conditions, equipment readiness, and overall safety.
- Inspect practice and competition facilities for potential hazards, including playing surfaces, weather-related concerns, equipment defects, and unsafe conditions.
- Ensure all required instructional, training, and safety equipment is properly organized and ready for use before activities begin.
- Ensure appropriate hydration opportunities are available consistent with NFHS, WVSSAC, and district guidelines.
- Monitor environmental conditions continuously, including heat, humidity, lightning, field conditions, and other factors that may impact participant safety.
- Communicate any actual or potential safety concerns immediately to the Athletic Director, Principal, and appropriate personnel.
- Take appropriate action to correct, mitigate, or restrict access to unsafe conditions until hazards can be resolved.
- Secure and properly store all equipment at the conclusion of practices and activities.
- Ensure facilities are cleaned, locked, and secured in accordance with school procedures.
Contest Responsibilities
- Direct all aspects of team preparation and participation before, during, and after contests.
- Ensure compliance with all WVSSAC, league, conference, and event regulations.
- Demonstrate professionalism and self-control during all contests.
- Model and enforce sportsmanship expectations among coaches, student-athletes, and spectators.
- Maintain supervision of student-athletes throughout all contests and related activities.
- Ensure student-athletes remain engaged, appropriately supervised, and in designated areas throughout contests.
- Remain with the team through the conclusion of contests and until all students have been properly released or transported.
Game and Event Safety Preparation
- Ensure all required equipment, uniforms, communication devices, medical supplies, first aid kits, and contest materials are available and prepared prior to events.
- Verify that emergency procedures and emergency response personnel are identified before the start of each home and away event.
- Ensure team personnel understand emergency communication procedures and reporting expectations.
- Confirm emergency contacts, AED locations, and emergency access routes are known and accessible.
- Coordinate with event administrators, athletic trainers, officials, and facility personnel regarding safety-related concerns.
- Assist in ensuring home event facilities and visiting team accommodations meet acceptable standards of safety and sportsmanship.
- Supervise post-event cleanup, equipment storage, facility security, and student dismissal procedures.
- For away contests, ensure necessary equipment, emergency information, medical supplies, and travel documentation accompany the team.
Emergency Action Plan (EAP) and Medical Preparedness
- Review and implement the school's Emergency Action Plan (EAP) for all practices, contests, conditioning sessions, and team activities.
- Ensure emergency procedures are communicated to assistant coaches, volunteers, and support personnel before the season and throughout the year.
- Verify that emergency contact information, medical release information, and emergency response procedures are accessible at all team activities.
- Ensure AED locations, emergency equipment, and emergency access routes are known and readily accessible to coaching staff.
- Confirm first aid supplies and emergency medical equipment are available and properly maintained before practices and contests.
- Coordinate with certified athletic trainers, school nurses, and emergency medical personnel when available.
- Immediately activate emergency procedures when circumstances warrant.
- Document and report significant injuries, illnesses, accidents, or emergency incidents in accordance with school and district procedures.
Student Supervision and Welfare
- Maintain active, attentive, and continuous supervision of student-athletes during all practices, contests, conditioning sessions, travel, meetings, and team activities.
- Never leave student-athletes unsupervised during school-sponsored athletic activities.
- Ensure student-athletes remain in authorized and supervised areas before, during, and after practices and contests.
- Monitor student behavior and enforce team rules fairly, consistently, and in accordance with school policy.
- Provide supervision during transitional periods, including arrival, dismissal, locker room access, team meetings, and transportation activities.
- Establish and maintain an environment that promotes respect, safety, inclusion, responsibility, and appropriate conduct.
- Promptly address and report behavioral concerns, safety concerns, harassment, bullying, hazing, or other conduct inconsistent with school policy or student welfare.
Injury Management and Student Health
- Prioritize student-athlete health and safety above competitive considerations.
- Immediately report all injuries, illnesses, suspected concussions, heat-related illnesses, cardiac symptoms, or other medical concerns to appropriate medical personnel.
- Ensure no student-athlete returns to participation without required medical clearance when mandated by law, policy, or protocol.
- Never minimize, dismiss, or discourage reporting of injuries, symptoms, or health concerns.
- Follow all district, WVSSAC, NFHS, and medical protocols regarding concussion management, heat acclimatization, sudden cardiac arrest awareness, and injury prevention.
- Maintain communication with parents/guardians and appropriate school personnel regarding significant health and safety issues as permitted by law and district procedures.
Equipment and Facility Management
- Maintain responsibility for the inventory, care, security, issuance, collection, and storage of uniforms and equipment.
- Ensure athletic facilities are maintained in a safe, clean, and organized condition.
- Inspect facilities and equipment before each practice and contest.
- Report maintenance and repair needs promptly.
- Secure all facilities and equipment following practices, contests, and team events.
- Ensure all program property is properly accounted for at the end of each season.
Budget and Program Administration
