Job description

POSITION: Graphic Designerย 

TYPE: Full-time, Salariedย 

CLASSIFICATION: Exemptย 

DEPARTMENT: Marketingย 

REPORTS TO: Director of Marketingย 

SUMMARYย 

The Graphic Designerย is responsible forย creating visual communications that support Virginia MOCA's exhibitions, public programs, fundraising initiatives, events, membership efforts, and institutional branding. Reporting to the Director of Marketing, this position serves as the museum's primary in-house design resource and collaborates with staff across departments to produce high-quality print and digital materials that engage visitors, members, donors, sponsors, and the broader community.ย 

The ideal candidate combinesย strong designย skills,ย creativity,ย attention to detail, and the ability to translate complex ideas intoย accessible andย compelling visual communications.ย This position offers a unique opportunity to help shape the visual identity and visitor experience of Virginia MOCAโ€™s new museum, bringing creativity and consistency to the ways audiencesย encounterย contemporary art.ย 

RESPONSIBILITIESย 

Design & Brand Managementย 

  • Design and produce print and digital materials that support exhibitions, programs, membership, fundraising initiatives, events, visitor engagement, and museum operations.ย 
  • Maintain Virginia MOCA's visual identity and develop creative solutions that support the museum's mission, programs, and initiatives.ย 
  • Prepare production-ready files for print vendors and digital distribution.ย 

Exhibition, Educational & Community Engagement Materialsย 

  • Collaborate with Exhibitions and Education staff to develop exhibition graphics, wall text layouts, gallery signage, interpretive materials,ย educational resources, and promotional assetsย 
  • Create materials that support school tours, workshops, lectures, family programs, camps, and community engagement initiatives.ย 
  • Translate exhibition themes and complex ideas into visually engaging, accessible, and audience-centered designs.ย 

Fundraising, Membership & Event Designย 

  • Design materials that support fundraising campaigns, membership initiatives, donor stewardship, sponsorships, grant proposals, capital campaigns, and corporate partnerships.ย 
  • Create branding, invitations, presentations, signage, environmental graphics, and promotional materials for museum programs,ย special events, and the Boardwalk Art Show.ย 

Visitor Experience & Operationsย 

  • Develop and update wayfinding signage, visitor information graphics, facility signage, and operational communications.ย 
  • Coordinate production specifications, vendor relationships, installationย logistics, and branded templates that support museum operations.ย 

Project Management & Collaborationย 

  • Manage multiple design projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines andย maintainingย high standardsย of quality and accuracy.ย 
  • Collaborate with staff across departments and external vendors to deliver effective design solutions.ย 
  • Maintain organized digital files, templates, archives, and project documentation.ย 
  • Stay informed about design trends, accessibility standards, and emerging technologies relevant to the museum field.ย 


SKILLS & EXPERIENCEย 

  • Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, Fine Arts, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.ย 
  • Five or more years of professional graphic design experience, preferably in a museum, nonprofit, arts, cultural, or agency environment.ย 
  • Strong portfolioย demonstratingย expertiseย in print and digital design.ย 
  • Proficiencyย in Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Acrobat.ย 
  • Understanding ofย print production processes, typography, layout, color management, and environmental graphics.ย 
  • Experience designing exhibition graphics, interpretive materials, and large-format environmental signage preferred.ย 
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards for digital and print communications preferred.ย 
  • Experience with Canva, Figma, motion graphics, video editing, photography, illustration, email marketing platforms, or web content management systems is a plus.ย 
  • Creativity and visual storytelling.ย

  • Ability to occasionally lift and transport presentation, exhibition, or signage materials.ย 

COMPENSATIONย 

Salary Range:ย ย $60,000/year
