How much do graduate mechanical engineer jobs pay per year?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a graduate mechanical engineer, and why are they important?
What are jobs for a recent mechanical engineer graduate?
As a recent mechanical engineer graduate, you can find entry-level jobs in your field in a variety of positions that focus on helping design and develop the technical specifications for various products. In one of these roles, you get more hands-on experience than you do as a student. You help senior engineers on a project and utilize math and measuring skills to help design new machines. Some details of this job vary by employer. For example, some employers may have you focus on repairing existing devices to learn more about the ins and outs of the product they create, while others may have you focus on assisting senior-level engineers.
What are some typical projects or tasks a graduate mechanical engineer can expect in their first year?
What is the difference between Graduate Mechanical Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?
| Aspect | Graduate Mechanical Engineer | Mechanical Design Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Qualifications | Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering; entry-level | Bachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering; some experience preferred |
| Work Environment | Internships, training programs, entry-level projects | Design offices, engineering teams, project-based work |
| Responsibilities | Assisting in projects, learning design processes, basic analysis | Creating and analyzing mechanical designs, CAD modeling, prototyping |
While both roles require a background in mechanical engineering, a Graduate Mechanical Engineer is typically an entry-level position focused on learning and supporting projects. A Mechanical Design Engineer, on the other hand, is more specialized in designing and analyzing mechanical components and systems, often requiring some prior experience or advanced skills. Both roles are essential in the engineering industry, with the design engineer position generally involving more technical responsibility.

Working alongside experienced commissioning professionals, you will gain hands-on exposure to HVAC systems, chilled water systems, cooling infrastructure, controls integration, and field testing activities.
This role is a strong fit for a developing technical professional, recent graduate, field technician, facilities operator, building engineer, military mechanical professional, or construction-minded candidate who enjoys learning in the field and wants to build a career in mission-critical commissioning and facility performance.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Assist with commissioning, testing, and verification of mechanical systems that support mission-critical facilities and data centers.
- Participate in field observations, equipment startup support, and functional testing alongside experienced technical staff.
- Gather field data, photos, notes, and system information to support documentation, issue tracking, and project closeout.
- Support project teams with coordination, site readiness, testing preparation, and clear communication across stakeholders.
- Build practical knowledge of HVAC, chilled water, cooling infrastructure, controls integration, and commissioning best practices.

- Basic understanding of mechanical equipment, facility systems, construction activities, or technical field work, with a willingness to continue learning.
- Ability to learn technical concepts and apply them in both office and field environments.
- Ability to read and interpret technical documentation, drawings, and system information with guidance.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to learn commissioning documentation tools or project software.
- Currently authorized to work in the U.S. full-time.
Preferred
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Facilities Management, Construction Management, Building Systems, or a related field.
- Exposure to HVAC systems, chilled water systems, controls, building automation systems, commissioning, data centers, or mission-critical facilities.
- Hands-on technical experience through internships, technician roles, trade programs, military service, facility operations, maintenance, or field-based project work.
- Interest in developing a long-term career in commissioning, building performance, data centers, or mission-critical operations.
Working Conditions:
- Typical Travel: Up to 75%. Travel requirements vary by project and individual location.
- Work Environment: Hybrid environment of office and field-based work for site visits. Site visits may include mission-critical facilities, data centers, active construction environments, mechanical rooms, uneven ground, varying weather conditions, and field interactions.
- Physical Requirements: Must be able to perform site inspections, which may include walking project sites, climbing ladders, occasionally lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs, and working in confined spaces when needed. Reasonable accommodation may be provided.
- Reports to: Mechanical Lead or assigned project technical lead.
- Supervisory Duties: This role has no supervisory responsibilities. The position is expected to learn from experienced team members, support assigned project activities, and contribute positively to team execution.
